Bedford-Stuyvesant - One Of New York's Hippest Neighborhoods 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 05, 2012) I absolutely loved living in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Also known as "Bed-Stuy," it's a vibrant and safe neighborhood in Brooklyn. I lived in Bed-Stuy for six years and was drawn to it by the culture, affordable brownstone apartments, density and proximity to Manhattan. Bed-Stuy is tee ...Read More ming with creatives and the intermingled culture of African Americans and Caribbean blacks, notably Jamaicans and Trinadadians. Since 2006, other ethnicities have begun to locate to the neighborhood. Bed-Stuy offers walkable blocks that are three times the length of those in Manhattan, and each is flanked by three to five floor brownstones. In fact, Bed-Stuy boasts the most brownstones in New York; brownstone apartment rentals range from $1500 to $2500, and an entire brownstone typically costs $400,000 and up. These iconic dwellings are inhabited by working class families, single professionals, entrepreneurs and accomplished young creatives, such as filmmakers, musicians, visual artists, and writers. In this way, Bed-stuy is like Harlem in the 1940's, offering a palpable zeitgeist. Just as Harlem had the upscale Sugarhill district in its heyday, Bed-Stuy's premier section is Stuyvesant Heights.

Bed-Stuy's residential blocks are sandwiched between bustling shopping districts, restaurants and cultural institutions. Hipster boutiques and art galleries exist alongside restaurants serving Caribbean cuisine. New York City's best rotis, jerk chicken and patties can be found there along with legendary music of the African diaspora. It's played in most of the shops and broadcast to passers-by.

Nestled between the Fort Greene and East New York neighborhoods, Bed-Stuy is ten minutes from Manhattan via three subway lines. The Long Island Railroad, a commuter train, also has a Bed-Stuy station. The subway transportation is fast and reliable; however, it is possible to be situated six or more blocks from the subway. In this instance, you confront packed double-buses en route to the train. Overall, it was great to live in Bed-Stuy. It was enriching in numerous ways. If you're drawn to the culture and demographics of New York's Lower East Side, Williamsburg neighborhood or the Bay area, you're likely to appreciate Bed-Stuy. Read Less
