Write a review about University Heights Tell people what you like or don't like about University Heights…
Should You Move To University Heights in NYC, New York? 3 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 10, 2014) University Heights is a dynamic and engaging neighborhood to live in, but it may not be the best atmosphere for everybody. Growing up in the area, I have a soft spot for it and don't mind the liveliness, diversity, and social environment that is University Heights. Some positives ...Read More of the neighborhood is reasonable cost of living when compared to other areas of New York City, the close proximity to larger attractions and other neighborhoods, and a neighborhood culture that can be fun and entertaining at times. Negatives of University Heights includes the crime rate, lower income surroundings, and very little of peace and quiet.

New York City is an expensive city to live in, almost despite the borough and neighborhood of your residence, so an area that is as cost effective as possible is highly desirable to many people. Of course the flip side to that is that you may get what you pay for. For those who have a primary focus on the bottom line and price of rent like my family did, University Heights is a viable option. University Heights is in the Bronx and relatively close to greater Manhattan. This makes the neighborhood ideal to live in to minimize living expenses, and commuting to Manhattan to maximize earning potential. This was a tactic I used to take advantage of the favorable housing costs in my home part of the city. Public transportation regularly runs through major points of the area and provides accommodations to reach or connect to any part of the city. I use to frequent the trains there and can vouch for their reliability. There is a diverse dynamic in University Heights with the majority of residents being Hispanic or African American and this helps add culture and exposure to different lifestyles. For those thinking about moving there that are fluent in Spanish, but struggles with English, this would be a very ideal neighborhood as roughly 25% of residents use little or no English in day to day living.

Puerto Rican and Dominican food can be easily found throughout the district as this is a huge demographic here. Areas for shopping and entertainment flourish along Fordham Rd and the nearby River Plaza mall. Some of the negatives about the neighborhood include the crime rate and loitering in the streets. In the day time, University Heights is relatively safe but late at night like many places can be a dangerous place outside. Many of the residents in the neighborhood are closer to the lower income bracket and the streets stay pretty busy and noisy. The Harlem River is a border to the west of the neighborhood and Jerome Avenue to the east. West 190th street borders the north and West Burnside is to the south. I lived in University Heights and felt bad to relocate from University Heights when I had to do so for job reasons, but it's not for everybody. Read Less
