Near The City But Not Too Much City: Oxford Circle, Philadelphia, PA

I moved to Oxford Circle in Philadelphia, PA, when I was 29. I looked around for a while because I wanted to be out of the city but close enough for a commute to work in the city. I wanted all the necessities close to my home and a reasonably quiet area that offered some night life. Being single at the time I was also interested in the age group that lived in the area and the ration of men to women.

Oxford Circle is in the lower northeastern area of Philadelphia. Basically centered on Castor Avenue, Oxford Circle is bounded by Roosevelt Boulevard on the east and south and by Cottman Avenue on the North and Oxford Avenue on the west.

I have enjoyed the nine years that I have lived here. Just about anything you need or want is within a mile or so except for a gym. The restaurants offer cuisine ranging from Philadelphia traditional to South American specialties. There are plenty of small clubs, a theater, movies, and five parks within walking distance of any part of Oxford Circle.

Housing prices are reasonable and lower than downtown. Rents are lower than in the city. The majority of the people I know work in some other part of Philly. There are 20 places where you can catch the bus or a train into the City. There is a lot of choice in grocery shopping in the area with at least 20 different grocery stores. Shopping locally is great with over 20 different stores within a few blocks of any part of Oxford Circle.

The average age for people in the area is mid-thirties. This is a good area to raise children because it has schools of any kind you could want that are close to where you live. The cost of living is lower than most of Philadelphia.

The area has a slightly higher crime rate than most of Philadelphia. Property crimes like vandalism and breaking and entering is the major problem and may be a result of an 11 percent poverty rate in and around the area. Police presence is the same per person as it is in all of Philadelphia. Crime rates have fallen in the last few years.

I have enjoyed my life in Oxford Circle. I met a wife, had two children, and have enjoyed a pleasant friendly community since I have lived here.

I would recommend the area because of the location, the low cost of living, the amenities, the schools, and the feeling of being out of the city but close enough to go to all of the major attractions or go to work without a long commute.
