My 20's & 30's in Chicago Lawn, Chicago

I lived in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois for a number of years when I was in my twenties and early thirties. The area is the southwestern portion of the city. People who live there tend to think of Marquette Park as the middle of the neighborhood. There are many aspects of the area that made my time there very enjoyable. However, while there are some excellent bonuses to the area, there are certainly some downsides in addition.

Crime in this area of the city is quite high. With a lot of low income folks and a high number of immigrants, that seems to come with the territory. The crime in the neighborhood was one of the main reasons that I decided to leave. Everyone wants security and I didn't want to worry so much about safety anymore.

Many households are Spanish-speaking, and though you can get by with just English, it certainly helps to know at least a little bit of Spanish.

Many of these households have a lot of children living in them. There are a lot of kids running around the streets. This has overcrowded some of the schools and completely changed the demographic.

However, there are plenty of perks to living in this area. The culture of this neighborhood is rich and there is a certain flavor to the mixing of ethnicity and tradition that makes Chicago Lawn a very cool and interesting area of the city. This variety of culture manifests itself prominently in the food. The food is simply put, incredible. Family owned restaurants serve traditional foods from a variety of countries throughout the world. Palestinian food is a favorite as is Mexican, Caribbean, and Egyptian. These restaurants are also targeted at people who live in these neighborhoods, so it's not too expensive. In fact, the cost of living in this neighborhood is quite low.

There is great shopping here. This is mostly thanks to the variety of stores offered in the Ford City Mall.

There are plenty of parks and open spaces, although these area become dangerous once it gets dark.

As far as nightlife goes, there are plenty of bars and places to hang out, but there is nothing special and nothing particularly unique or fun. Those who enjoy the bar scene will appreciate what the area has to offer, but it is certainly nothing out of the ordinary.
