I'm from Anchorage. Anchorage WAS relatively safe just about 3-4 years ago. A lot of the reviews here seem incredibly dishonest, but the crime rate is still high. Anchorage stil has the highest rape rate in the US and a very high violent and property crime rate. Aside from the crime rate, the schools aren't terrible, it's not terribly expensive to live, and the scenery is nice. Other than that, however, there isn't much reason to live in Anchorage. The grocery prices alone are 2nd highest in the nation. You definitely will not have trouble finding a job in Anchorage, however. The benefits you get from a lot of the local jobs are also pretty decent. I just can't recommend anyone living here until the crime issue is fixed. I used to live in one of the safer areas on the West Side and there have been 3 murders within a mile from my home within the last year and an assault/battery right behind my house in an assisted living home (my great grandfather used to live there.) This is by far the worst place to live as a young woman. The rape rate has been the highest and will probably stay the highest in the US for a long while. That is a giant issue. Not only that, but the violent crime rate has been growing exponentially in the last 4 or so years. This alone has increased the rape rate along-side it, making Anchorage have almost 3x more rapes than the #2 spot lolAnchorage is also fairly dense for a city of ~400K, with a metro area of just around 70 Square miles (don't believe google, 1,700 Square Miles counts the entire Matanuska borough, not Anchorage the city). This means that you won't go far before you're in a sketchy area. I can walk 10 minutes and be in the murder "capital" of the city. I even grew up in the current Murder central in Anchorage. Basically, from anywhere in the city you can get to hotspots of crime (intentionally or unintentionally) within ~10 minutes of driving. Don't live here. At least not right now. It was great just a decade ago and one of the best places you could live as a young person looking for work, but holy fuck is it a sinking ship. I lived there for 18 years (my entire life) and I could not be happier to leave. It sucks because Anchorage has so much potential, the police just have way too much on their hands. Not worth it.

How much sunlight is there in the Winter months in Anchorage? I've heard that the Winter months in Anchorage are killer and only produce a small amount of sunlight per day during these months, does anyone know how much sunlight there is in the Winter months in Anchorage?
