DISREGARD OTHER POST. Sadly, there is no edit button for posts. I hope this post looks better. CRIME: I've lived in Stephens City for seven years and there is no crime that I know of in my area, so the A+ in crime is very accurate. A few years ago, t ...Read More
here was an isolated shooting incident involving drunk men. Unfortunately, alcohol can bring out the worst in people no matter where they live. There were a couple of drunk-driving deaths a few years ago. Again, alcohol-related problems. NIGHTLIFE: There is pretty much no nightlife here unless you count the occasional live band at Del Rio (Mexican restaurant). Nightlife can be found about 10 minutes away in Winchester. The Family Drive-In Theatre is very popular. If it floats your boat, there is a Moose Lodge. DINING: There are very few restaurants here. The busiest place is Romas (Italian & Greek family restaurant). There are a few restaurants, fast foods, and carry-out restaurants. Winchester has plenty of restaurants, but the Green Turtle, Carrabba's, Outback Steakhouse, and Alamo Drafthouse (theater) are closer to Stephens City. ATTRACTIONS: The teensy-weensy downtown area on Main Street has a few small attractions. The Newtown History Center is a museum that offers civil war and history type events. There are 4th of July fireworks near the high school. Winchester has the annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival that features celebrities and athletes, various dance parties, live bands, luncheons, dinners, parades, and more. SHOPPING: There are three grocery stores if you include Wal-Mart. There are a few interesting and worthwhile thrift/antique shops in Stephens City. There's a CVS, Walgreen's, Rite-Aid, Dollar General, Ace Hardware, and maybe a couple of smaller retailers. A few minutes away in Winchester there is the Apple Blossom Mall and plenty of shopping (Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Ross Dress for Less, Talbot's, Michael's Arts & Crafts, Best Buy, Pier I, Home Goods, TJ Maxx, and more). HOUSING: The rentals are affordable, especially compared to a larger metropolitan area closer to DC. The typcical rent for a two-bedroom in Northern Virginia is usually $2,000 and up with no utilities included. Here, you could rent a two-bedroom (1100 sf) for approximately $1,000 with some utilities included. There is an abundance of single family homes, townhomes, and condos to buy ranging from $90,000 to $700,000 with the average being around $200,000. EDUCATION: Middletown is approximately 15 minutes south of Stephens City and many people attend Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC). In Winchester, Shenandoah University (SU) offers a wide-range of undergraduate and graduate degrees. Christendom College is in Front Royal, which is about 30-40 minutes south of Stephens City. There's also Randolph-Macon Academy (college prep school for 6-12 grades) in Front Royal. I didn't attend school in this area, so I cannot attest to the academic quality or safety of the elementary, middle or high schools in Stephens City.
