A Fun Place to Live: Pine Hills, Florida 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( Feb 17, 2015) I moved to Pine Hills FL from Charlottesville, Virginia in 2009. I had just graduated from high school and planned to stay with my older cousin who already lived there. The plan was to attend Valencia College which is only about 2 miles south of Pine Hills. Valencia or VC is a st ...Read More ate college that was initially founded as a junior college or community college in the 1960s. The school is ranked number 1 for the number of two year degrees given. The Aspen Institute named VC as the top US community college in 2011. It also won first prize for College Excellence. VC is definitely a source of pride for residents of Pine Hills. Pine Hills has produced several notable athletes such as Chris Johnson, a running back in the NFL and Darryl Dawkins of the NBA. Pine Hills is also home to several hip-hop artists including the duo Smilez and Southstar. There are also a number of places for outdoor recreation. Lake Small, Lake Pinto, Dwarf Lake, and Lawne Lake have public fishing with a fishing license. There are many types of fish you can catch including Drum, White Catfish, and Striped Bass. The Paintball World Sports Complex is nearby which is a lot of fun! They have an outdoor paintball facility with 9 fields and equipment rentals.

There are 4 parks in Pine Hills with ball fields and playgrounds. The largest is Barnett Park with a pro BMX track, ball fields, nature trails, event pavilions, and dog parks. Pine Hills is an unincorporated area in Orange County just west of Orlando. Several areas of Pine Hills were annexed by Orlando in the 1980s. Although it was once an upper middle class community, Pine Hills started to decline in the late 1980s and 1990s. The area is regarded as a high-crime area even though revitalization efforts are in the works. Fortunately our house has never been broken into, so I think it is a great place to live! Read Less
