Unbeatable Uptown, Chicago

I have called this neighborhood my home for twelve years now and moved to Uptown from Florida. Some ask me why I would leave the sunshine for the north, and my answer has always been that I wanted to experience the big city. Living at Ashland and Wilson, right along the border of Uptown and Irving Park, I have been able to experience so much. Uptown borders Foster Avenue to the north, Lake Michigan to the east, Montrose to the south, and Ravenswood to the west. Vibrant and full of a strong dichotomy of rich and poor, Uptown is a wonderful amalgamation of city life.

Like Irving Park, Uptown is located between two train lines - the brown and the red. It is at a perfect location in the north where the train is never too full no matter what rush may be hitting the trains closer to downtown. This also makes mass transit a popular way to get around. The cost of living averages 17% lower than the Chicago average at about $729. Crime is also a third lower than the Chicago average, however, there are definitely section of Uptown that should be avoided at night. With a max travel time to the beach at about thirty minutes, it is an ideal spot to be near the lake without paying for prime location. Also, if you like Pho, Little Vietnam on Argyle serves some of the best in the city.

As mentioned before, Uptown is a patchwork of rich and poor. From Ravenswood to Broadway, the neighborhood is nice and full of young adults, their families, and higher end homes and restaurants. Broadway to the lake, however, is very questionable. You have to be on guard and protect your belongings as stalkers and vagrants populate this area. Main roadways are dirty and littered while the buildings are not well kept. Housing is also very expensive at around $367,043 which is 36% higher than the Chicago average. More residential than not, there are few attractions and even fewer shopping centers.
