  • Nelson-Atkins Museum of ArtAttractions » Museums4525 Oak St, 64111The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri has exhibits featuring different art styles and specializes in life-size sculptures. The history of the museum complex is intriguing. Mary Atkins was a school teacher, and she bequeathed $300,000,000 to the city for the purpose of building an art museum. For a few years her funds were managed and they grew to $700,000,000 by the late 1920s. William Rockhill Nelson was the publisher for the Kansas City Star, and he died in 1915. In his will, he provided that on the death of his wife and daughter his estate should be used for artwork for the general public to appreciate. Additional funds were eventually applied to his gift, and the money from both major donors combined for creation of the spectacular complex seen today. Admission to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is free to all guests.

The layout encourages foot traffic among the several square blocks. Kansas City is known as the City of Fountains, so there are several within the Country Club Plaza. There are several prominent statues within the Plaza. Brush Creek flows along the south side of the Country Club Plaza, with paved trails alongside for walking and bicycling. A wide street lined with shops, fountains and statues, Ward Parkway runs along the south side of the Plaza. Main Street runs north to south along the eastern boundary. On the north boundary is 47th Avenue, site of many shops and restaurants. Several buses run on this street, so it's easy to visit the Country Club Plaza without a car. Streets rise steeply north of the Country Club Plaza.

Discounts are offered for active duty military families and career military personnel.
