Worcester, Massachusetts - A History Buff's Pleasure 4 rating By Anonymous ( May 05, 2010) Worcester Massachusetts is located just west of Boston. Residents perceive it as the heart of Central New England. Best described as a metropolis with small town warmth, Worcester contains all the beauty New England has to offer. This mid sized city is rich in culture and history ...Read More , the home of many attractions including the Massachusetts Vietnam War Memorial, The Korean War Memorial, and historic Elm Park. The land was purchased in 1854 using public funds, acknowledged as the first land purchase for a United States public park. Worcester houses ten colleges and universities with at least six others in the neighboring communities and surrounding cities.

My husband grew up just outside of Worcester and visits annually. After every trip, he just raves about the beauty of Worcester; the scenes are breathtaking. The eastern boundary is located at the foothills overlooking the Blackstone River and Lake Quinsigamond. Being a history advocate his chosen activity is touring the Worcester Historical Museum. It contains a research library with over seven thousand publications, thousands of documents, and a large collection of artifacts. This particular visit, he examined the correspondence of Abby Kelley Foster, an abolitionist and raved about the Civil War era diaries and letters. He conveyed the beauty of woodenware and ceramics from Worcester's industrial past. The thing he liked best was the weaponry from the colonial era through World War II.

Summing it up, Worcester Massachusetts is fantastic vacation city for a history enthusiast and would probably be a great place to relocate to. Read Less

Worcester, Massachusetts is the namesake behind Worcester County in the state. The city has a population of around 180,000. It is actually the second largest city in all of New England. It was named after the town of Worcester in England. A heart is the symbol of the city through the recognition of Worcester being the "Heart of the Commonwealth." It is a truly interesting, Victorian-like city.

Worcester has the Blackstone River throughout the city, which helps to divide it into its neighborhoods. The seven hills of the town include seven of the neighborhoods such as Airport Hill and Grafton Hill. There are three other hills as well composing the neighborhoods Indian Hill, Wigwam Hill and Newton Hill. Each neighborhood is very friendly towards family and offers a historical value unlike any other.

Worcester is a very expensive town to live in. It is in close proximity to the greater Boston area, which adds to the expenses of living there. The average price of a home in Worcester is around $200,000 which is significantly higher than that of the rest of the nation. The average price of a one-bedroom apartment is around $1,000, which is also higher.

Utility costs are also more expensive in Worcester than the rest of the nation, though they are very similar to prices in the rest of the state. Grocery costs are also higher in the city, though they are actually lower than those throughout the rest of the state. Finally, transportation costs are lower than both the nation and the rest of Massachusetts as a whole.

The Providence and Worcester Railroad is headquartered in the city. It services most of New England. The Framingham/Worcester commuter railway also comes through the station to assist commuters who work in Boston or other cities. There is also a public bus system that operates under the Worcester Regional Transit Authority. OurBus, Greyhound bus services, and PeterPan Bus Lines all operate out of the city as well.

There are many events throughout the year for you and your family to enjoy in Worcester such as the Worcester Music Festival and the Worcester County St. Patrick's Day Parade. There are museums as well to learn about the history of the city and the art including the Worcester Art Museum and the Higgins Armory Museum.
