Whittier, California - An Historic Suburbia

Home to Whittier College and once-home to President Richard Nixon, Whittier, California, is a run-of-the-mill southern California suburb with some colorful. I visited there on business a number of times, and there are notable landmarks (but nothing too famous), average restaurants (some good, some bad), and average entertainment (driving into Los Angeles is a better bet). If you're looking for something historical, the Pio Pico house is not to be missed - Pio Pico was the last Mexican governor of California - and the house and grounds are quite lovely. A number of movies have also been filmed in the city of Whittier, and you might recognize the Whittier High School from the Back to the Future series.

You'll definitely need a car to get around the city, but aside from historic places and the college, your next best activity in Whittier is probably to get some food. The restaurants near Whittier College are best, particularly the pizza joints. However, Whittier is only 12 miles southeast of Los Angeles, so it is easy to get to Dodgers games, Disneyland, Hollywood restaurants, and other famous LA activities.
