Currently living here for College. Valparaiso is a pretty nice town overall, the downtown area is thriving, with lots of successful businesses and festivals every year. I am from a similar-sized town in Maryland, and Valparaiso is definitely a safer area with a lower crime rate, ...Read More
and safe to walk around at night for the most part.
Target, Walmart, and many other places to eat/shop are located a walking distance from the campus, and sidewalks are available throughout these areas. Local Restaurants here are high quality, and I'd personally recommend Suzie's Cafe, and Burger Haus, many pizza places around town too.
The weather here is pretty nice in the summer, it can get pretty hot/humid at times, but generally not as bad or persistent as places on the east coast or south. The Indiana Dunes National Park is only a 20 minute drive up State Route 49, and the beaches are good for swimming. The one main downside to this area is the climate outside of the summer months. It's pretty breezy year round, and tends to be rainy in the fall/spring. Winters here can be absolutely dreadful at times, with subzero temps and lake effect snow that blows around in the wind. If you don't mind harsh winter weather though, this is a great place to live.
