Topanga has several different neighborhoods, each with its own unique feel. But everyone in Topanga, even if they don't know each other, is bonded in that they all live in an extreme fire danger area. It's impressive how volunteers have come together to form a community safety website, set up various modes of communications, organized arson watchers and expert workshops, etc. to alert the population of fires, land/mud slides, car accidents, and prep for earthquakes. I've moved away, but Topanga will always be in my heart. From the Pacific Ocean to the Woodland Hills (the valley), I never tired of the winding drive up that gorgeous, folksy, artsy canyon—you see deer, skunks, coyotes, and an occasional owl, bobcat, and rarely a mountain lion. Stunning landscapes and sunsets. Lots of families and community events. Plenty of characters livin' up there in there hills too! But safe characters—not to worry. We'd take walks at night and feel remarkably safe. But if you chose to live there, I highly recommend you have an alternative place to stay (with a family, friend, workplace) during Red Flag days when the Santa Ana winds whip up the devil winds. It can be very scary.
