I was living in Hackensack, New Jersey when I was offered an opportunity to work temporarily in South Valley, New Mexico. What a clash in living! I had lived in a high rise surrounded by thousands of people. I believed that there was not one person too many. In South Valley, I mo ...Read More
ved into a track house, and I had a lawn and area between between houses. I grew to love the space of a private home with area between houses.
South Valley is easy living. There is little congestion, little to get frustrated over in everyday living and people are calm and pleasant. South Valley is on the edge of Albuquerque and close to the desert. The sunsets are exquisite in the desert, which is very calming to the mind and spirit. I would take drives into the desert and meditate in the vast expanses of space. I took long hikes contemplating the meaning of life.
Coming from the New York Metropolitan area, South Valley lacks by comparison in shopping, restaurants and the singles scene. Yet, South Valley has something more, something different. It is an ideal place to raise a family. The cost of living is reasonable, it is a safe place to live and children have freedom to go outside to play unsupervised. There is a sense of community, and I actually got to know my neighbors. The restaurants may not be international with high Michelin ratings, but there are restaurants that serve delicious South West food. Shopping consists of national chains, which is not very exciting. But there are shops that sell Indian pottery and jewelry, and the Indian art is exquisite. Whatever South Valley lacks in international flavor, it makes up for in quality of living.
