My family and I have now lived in Sound Beach for two years. We were transferred to Long Island by my husband's employer. We are originally from the Southwest and have lived in a college town in the South. Pending our move, we expected the traffic, cold winters and high cost of living. Our criteria for finding a Long Island town were as follows: great schools, rent under $2,000,and safety. After lots of online research and enlisting in help from a realtor, Sound Beach seemed to be the only place that fit the bill. Here are the pros and cons:
-great schools(Miller Place school district)
-affordable( by Long Island standards)
_about 50 miles from NYC
_close proximity to nice towns such as Miller Place and Port Jefferson
_artistically not so pretty, rather ratty looking. One house may be well kept and plesent while the house next door looks condemned.
-expensive( by US standards)
_no close access to the 495
_no sense of community and a hard place to make friends
All in all my family has had a nice experience on Long Island but are looking forward to moving somewhere with mild winters and where you can get more bang for your buck.
