I give Somers point a 6 out of 10 because its safe and has excellent schools BUT renting houses is expensive at about $1800 per month at the cheapest ( not apartments), property taxes for home owners range from $5,000 to $9,000 per year..no jobs, scarce and high price renting, an ...Read More
d it only snows about every 2 years and does not snow more than 4 separate times .If it does snow. Also only about 2 inches of snow total each snow day. In 2017 was a great snow and so was 2018 but since then thats it. So if your family likes sledding and making snowmen your kids may be grown before the next snowfall lol. The Summers are unbearably hot in the 90 degrees and higher. It does not cool off into the 70 degree range until mid October. Mid to late October is when the leaves start to change colors for Autumn. Most house / apartment rentals have window units for keeping cool. Older, rustic, non updated homes. Some beautiful, peaceful neighborhoods but cold winters will freeze you out in these older 1950 out dated homes and also keep you sweating in the Summer. The cold months are from November to April. May to October are the hot months. Coming from central Florida and comparing the rain to Somers Point it almost feels like it does not rain a normal amount here. It does not rain often.
Schools: The teachers are good in the preschool, elementary, middle, and high school s. I've had problems with the office staff unfortunately in almost each of the schools. Either quick, rude, not patient, not friendly, or do not speak english very well. Having great teachers make up for those issues. Especially special education , learning impaired, learning disabilities. The schools are prepared and very helpful , accommodating. Charter Tech highschool is a great school. There are 2 highschools. New York Ave School is preschool only and great. 1 middle school. 1 elementary school.
Doctors: There are not many pediatricians located in Somers point so you would have to go to Linwood, Atlantic city, or Egg harbor twp. The neighborhoods are safe during the day and night. I accidentally left my wallet out in my driveway one night and it was still there in the morning.
Dentist: There are 3 dental offices.
Eye care: 2 places.
Hair: 2 hair places. A Sportsclips and a Supercuts
Things to do: There is a lovely, very well lit bike path that runs through the whole city. Dogs, bikers, walkers, joggers love it. 1 playground/ park with grills in Somers Point called Kennedy Park. The Somers point beach is small, free, families love it. You can only go in the water until 5 or 6 pm because the lifeguards go home. No swimming without a lifeguard. There is a dog park in Somers point. A dog beach as well and its free.
Housing: Mostly quiet , safe and full of apartments, townhouses. Smaller selection of houses available. Mostly a tourist/ seasonal area. More retirement age than families. There definitely are families but, there are more 60 and up age people than families. Rentals for a 3 bedroom house are $1700 - $2500 per month if you can find one that is not seasonal. Having even 1 cat or dog make renting not able to happen if you want to be in Somers point and prefer a house. Realtors do stress that to you. Smoking inside rental is almost never a problem but having a pet is a big no - no. I don't understand that. Landlords generally require a 700 credit score in this area as well. Renting a 3 bedroom town house or apartment is $1300- $1700 per month. Security to rent is generally 1 month and a half. Houses tend to have the historic beach cottage appeal and do not have updated bathrooms, most house rentals have 1 bathroom not 2. The floors in a lot of the homes are not updated. I got the feeling everything is a rustic, small, out dated reoccuring issue. Comfy and great location.. You are mostly paying a high price for the 5 minute drive to the boardwalk in Ocean city which has lots to do for families like the ocean, the typical amusement boardwalk park rides, indoor/ outdoor golf, video game arcade, ferris wheel, food.
Somers Point has:
2 firestations, 1 police station, 1 library, 4 different bank options, at least 4 churches.
Resturaunts: Only 4 fast food places: McDonald's, Chipotle, Wendy's, Dunkin Donuts. There are about 4 small Italian resturaunts, 2 Mexican, 4 nice restaurants for date night that are steak, seafood type of food. 1 Applebees. About 4 bar/ pub places.
Hotels: 6 in Somers Point
Gas stations: 4 gas stations
Grocery Stores: 1 Acme, 1 Shoprite, 1 Big lots, 1 dollar general.
1 public sports field equipped with areas for all the sports, even hockey.
1 CVS, 1 Walgreens
2 laundromats
2 carwashes
Wonderfully Diverse: Demographics Ethnicity/ race: 45% White, 40% Mexican/ latino, 12% Black, 3% Asian / Indian, Other. This is only a guess, an observation and estimate made by our opinion from observing the 3 schools my kids personally go to and also from what we see at time of pick up at the school and by observing my neighborhood and all of our friends/ families neighborhoods in Somers Point over the last 5 years. You can see Somers Point is diverse and everyone is welcomed here with open arms. Somers Point is friendly, inviting, and pleasant.
Transportation: There are many bus stops. You can walk to most stores here with in 20 min or less. There is a lot of honking. Lol. We joke about the fast driving and honking feeling like a fast paced NY city or something.
Likable things about Somers point: Safe ,quiet neighborhoods.Schools are great, our Super Intendant is a truly concerned member with the school system. She is genuinely sweet, understanding ,and loves to help all of the families feel at ease and enjoy a smooth experience with the schools. If you are moving here with children that is good to know. There is a Somers Point bike path that is fun for 1 year olds to 70 year olds. Everybody enjoys it. A wide path for baby strollers and wheelchairs,, dogs, bikes, skateboards, scooters, wagons. Smooth pavement redone within the last year. A light post guided path that is paved and has benches every so often if you need to rest. All ages. There is a yearly Christmas parade, Halloween trunk or treat, Bay fest yearly celebration with bounce houses,, art crafts, food in May, huge Kennedy Park playground with a great free boat ramp, nicely kept roads, sidewalks throughout neighborhoods. Good amount of crosswalks for safety throughout the city.
Unlikable parts to Somers point: House rentals ( not the apartments) are rare and crazy expensive ( $1700 - $2500 monthly) and most say no pets and usually require a 700 credit score to rent. Also, Employment ( local jobs) is bad. I've been here over 5 years and I do not know a single person that works in the city of Somers Point. Most of the local residents, families- the parents work in Egg harbor twp or some of the big companies like Gas, Utilities, underground construction companies - those head quarters are in Absecon, Nj, Hammonton,Nj ,Pennsylvania or New York. Most residents have jobs located outside of Somers point. Teenagers have a good source of jobs in Somers Point from places like 5 below, Staples, Big lots, phone call center Gwhs. Also, its hard to retire in Somers Point and in NJ in general because of very high property taxes. Also most neighborhoods in Somers point have the houses very close together but, you do get somewhat used to it after a while but, keep that in mind if that bothers you.
All in all I do not regret moving here and I would recommend Somers Point to other people because of how amazing the teachers and schools are here. The large park and bike path are fun too. Pleasant and comfy but expensive rentals and no local adult employment. I give Somers Point a 6 out of 10 in rating it (good.)

The mansion was built in the early 1700s and is now a tourist attraction.
Somers Point largest employer is Shore Medical Center. The city is primarily residential. Somers Point is approximately 10 miles SW of Atlantic City. Visitors might enjoy a break in the action of Atlantic City and experience a more laid back, nautical culture. Since this is a bay front community, there are many good restaurants and marinas. It's a perfect location for boating and fishing. It's also home to Assault on Patchong Creek, America's largest crabbing tournament. The best part is the after party, a barbecue with a pig roast, hot dogs, beer, soda and all the fixings for an awesome summer afternoon and evening.
