See the crime statistics in crime databases that outside of Detroit, Fairbanks Alaska and 3 other huge metro areas, Shasta County has been the 5th most dangerous city in the US for women. A detective I worked with professionally informed me that women shouldn't walk anywhere alone in this area. Of course being an avid hiker and outdoors person my dog and I hiked alone often. I quit when I found out the assault rate. It takes the fun out of an isolated hike
I found a good deal on a house and bought it before I knew the area was called "meth alley" in Shasta Lake. Hearing the garbage cans rattling at 6 am there people were canvasing the neighborhood looking for tin cans to sell as your garbage can got rummaged through, I felt sad for these people, but it felt unsafe as well. The environment made my neighbors highly suspicious of each other. And sadly I realized that a neighbor worked at the same clinic I did, never responded to me saying hello either at work or across the fence. The snobbishness was so unnecessary but it was a cliquey place.
The years I lived there I saw many people come and go, drawn by the large charismatic Bethel church and then disillusioned with the reality that the pastors at what is basically a cult had body guards and no time for "little" people. The climate is unbearable unless you don't mind heatstroke weather for 5 months of the miserable year. There are possible 4 months of the year with really pleasant temperatures the rest of the time is is hellish. Utilities are expensive , work is hard to find and based on who you know, people are fake friendly "hey give you me your number lets get together sometime" only to have them never call or if they do try to sell you something.
Work has a lot of nepotism going on in both jobs I had in the city, relatives, friends, get the promotions based on things other than work history or performance.
Between the crime, the heat, the nepotism, the dirty little secrets that the county pimped itself out to have sex offenders courted as residents in some sort of grant deal "we give you money you take them in" I'm shocked no one has done a 60 minute expose about this. I wouldn't wish this place on a dog or my worst enemy . I've never been to jail but my years living there were I was stuck because I couldn't unload my house were the worst of my life
This is another town where people do fine if they have the money to take lots of trips elsewhere during the hot seasons. I gave it 3 stars because Shasta Lake at one time was pretty but zero stars is probably more accurate

Living in Shasta Lake, CA was one of the greatest short stays I had. We were staying in the campsite areas and I loved it. This city is a really great city to go fishing and camping. There are so many different sites to go do outdoor types of activities. My family and I loved being here. However there was not too much opportunity for work here. The homes here are very beautiful and also very affordable. As a city person, I did not see to much city life here.
The best areas in Shasta Lake, CA were the outdoor activity locations nearby our area that we were staying at. One of the places that my family and I enjoyed was called Oasis Fun Center on Cascade Blvd. This place was fun for my family because of the laser tag and mini golf they offered. The weather here is nice, but sometimes the Summers can be brutal. The Winters here can also get very cold and snowy. There was not a lot of places to shop here, which was one of the downfalls.
