I am an Evergreen resident of 20 years living specifically in the Chaboya neighborhood. I have seen most of the the area's expansion. Thanks to the Evergreen Specific Plan, a carefully considered plan for development and growth, the area built out since the 1980s as intended. Muc ...Read More
h of that growth occurred during the valley's great need for technical talent as well as during the large immigration when Hong Kong was returned to Chinese rule. Therefore, the residents are mostly Asian and sub-Asian homeowners with many having a technical background and working in the core of Silicon Valley's high-tech companies. Subsequently, an appreciation for education has resulted in some of the highest standard score testing in the South Bay in local schools. That and the area's relatively newer housing had kept home values high. Plus, the area's natural amenities such as its several pocket and linear parks along with its proximity to open space, ranches, regional and state parks gives the area more secluded feel rather than just a simple me-to suburban air typical of most neighborhoods deeper into the valley. Indeed, Evergreen lies in a spur of the city so that traffic is either coming or going rather than traversing through making traffic lighter and, because of motorists connection with the neighborhood, more responsible. That doesn't mean the area is not visited by the occasional scofflaws but few find much reason to remain. Which brings up the fact that retail, service, and eateries have been slow to establish in the area. Frankly, the unique or at least newly emerging demography of Evergreen gives pause for new businesses to practice in the area. Thankfully, that situation has been welcome by the few who risk settling here and several have been successful. That is seen as restaurants and new businesses have finally begun filling out the spaces in Evergreen's Village Square, a community plaza that may be the prettiest in the South Bay.Visitors and new residents always remark at the area's peaceful ambiance and most feel safe on the streets at any time day or night. Evergreen isn't known for its nightlife, dining scene, or retail conveniences and, instead, prefer the quiet of a community that serves as a haven, an antidote if you will, from the hectic life further up in the core of the Silicon Valley. With its pretty streets, open and gorgeous surroundings and hillsides, great schools, inviting parks and pathways, it's no wonder that the area is coveted by potential homeowners and appreciated by visitors who get to visit a unique part of San Jose.
