Quaint Neighborhood, Low Crime, Minimal Night Life User Rating 4 rating By 287 Anderson St. ( Jan 14, 2015) I have been living right off of Cortland Ave. in the heart of the district for about 5 months.

Pros: Grocery store, cafes, bakeries, gift shops, ATM, hair salon, a public library and even a couple bars conveniently located in the center of town. While a bit far from downtown, it
...Read More is convenient to Mission. Very quiet and family-oriented area. Has a couple of scenic parks which are romantic and lovely. Home of Spicy Bite which might be my favorite Indian restaurant in the city. Has a flea market in the southern region of the district with a great selection of random paraphernalia.

Cons: Not convenient to BART; need to take a bus to get there or walk a long distance up and down massive hills. Unreasonably high cost of living (just like the rest of SF, but still.) Population is a bit on the heteronormative side and not overly diverse. Most restaurants in the area, albeit tasty, are super overpriced (meaning they cater almost exclusively to those who work in tech,) but hey if you've got the dineros to burn then by all means. The local grocery store (Good Life) is way overpriced and does not have the best selection of goods. Young people will generally categorize the area as "boring" with the lack of clubs and night life. Very steep hills which make many areas in the neighborhood inconvenient or inaccessible for the elderly and those who are less mobile than others. Read Less
