Deer Valley Neighborhood is Nice, But Could Have Been So Much More

I have owned my home in the Deer Valley area for over 27 years. It sits in an area that literally had nothing around it in the 1970s, when my friends would hold drinking parties out in the middle of nowhere. Soon enough, nowhere became a neighborhood. I guess the most distressing thing about the Deer Valley area is that it is merely a place to live. There has been no new development near my home in over 10 years. If you want to do something interesting in the Deer Valley Area, you don't have a lot of choices. It is the home of one of Phoenix's best-kept secrets, the Phoenix Rock Art Center. Located at the point where Deer Valley Road meets the mountains, the Center highlights an amazing display of petroglyphs carved into the mountain rock by early Native American tribes. Animals, humans and tribal symbols can be found in abundance here. But that's pretty much it for local entertainment. As the area has grown, a good number of predictable shopping and dining options have sprung up. The Target Center on the Agua Fria Highway features a number of chain restaurants ranging from Subway to Chili's to Claim Jumper if you're hungry and not on a budget. You'll also find the requisite AMC multiplex theater there. As far as nightlife after the restaurant goes though, you'll have to do what we all do and seek it elsewhere. Aside from a bar near the Deer Valley Airport and the Bliss Show Club (a topless joint) at 19th Avenue and Deer Valley, There is very little nightlife to speak of. it's kind of sad that many years ago, when this area was considered on the "outskirts" of Phoenix, it played host to Crazy Ed's, one of the more legendary restaurants to bring the tourists to. Now there is nothing close to that anywhere in the area. As far as the community overall, the Deer Valley area is a relatively crime-free area. Two high schools, Deer Valley and Barry Goldwater, have a half-hearted sports rivalry. Where you send your child will depend on where you live. Homes in the area are priced about evenly with the rest of the Valley. Come take a look!

How is living in Deer Valley? Husband and I are looking to relocate, and I was just wondering how it is living there? Safe? I see crime rate isn't so good, but I also know everywhere has a bad side of town. Thanks!
