High Taxes / Poor City Services/ Poor Health Care 1 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 18, 2026) I have lived in North Bend since 2021. Disgusted by how city hall treats residents I am moving, as soon as I can, to Washington prior to the Coos Bay planned port expansion proposed for 2030, enabling 300 cargo ships and trains a day porting here ruining any peaceful nature vie ...Read More ws.

We have crumbling streets and sewerlines with huge pending tax increases to fix them.
The city waterboard has announced over the next five years rate increases of $179 more a year with no plans to hault future increases

We have no community recreation center no performing art center. No shopping mall with stores like Macey's or Victoria Secret. The mall is small, outdated, and has vacant spaces while renting to swap meet like vendors.
Downtown buildings
and homes were built in the early 1900's uneven floors with a funky musty mold smell prevails every where. I have found no good restaurants here to safely eat at with food and decoram matching Los Angeles quality dining. Most shops and restaurants are only open 3 to 4 days a week for 20 to 30 hours closing by 8pm. No night life.

Expect as a new home owner to pay 2/3 more taxes than any long standing residents who are locked in at lower tax rates. This results in the city being unable to balance their budget without constantly raising everyones taxes through swing vote ballot measures.

Every November the county or city tries to swing vote ballot measures to increase our taxes. The seniors who pay less vote yes while new comers suffer the most if taxes are raised again after we vote no.II now pay over $1,000 a year in addition to the city taxes paid via my property tax to pay high staff salaries.

Worst yet expect to be treated horribly by the city manager and city council members who refuse to modernize our charter with community members input to make new rules to hold city officials accountable to the tax payer.
Don't expect anyone to answer the phone to provide you service at city hall. Staff do what they want if they want setting rules for you to follow if you want service that accommodate them NOT you.

Upset with how unprofessionally you are treated?...too bad...staff protect themselves preventing community members from ever to filing a formal compliant that is recorded by docket number for public transparency to council and community members to see repeated offenses. This set up prevents any documentation to hold the city manager accountability to meet customer satisfaction service goals through training and monitoring staff

Fictional propaganda reports are created and posted on the city website where the city administrator Mr. Milliron states we are all happy with his management when the real story is we are intentionally censored and the city fails to even collect current annual performance feedback from a minimum of
10% of the community member population to show accurate accountbility feedback on how the staff is actually performing or the areas needing improvement.

Its a good old boy/gal town which I read on a forum prior to moving here not understanding this concept till now.

Expect your opinion to not count. Expect the same people along with their friends to rule over you not serving you or representing your wants or needs. They feel their job is to just spend community funds without community input.

Council members do not respond to emails, do not respond during nor after council meetings to address resolution to any concerns.

Expect the same pack of elected officials to monopolize your government for 25 plus years because they refuse to modernize our charter rules to have maximum term limits for anyone holding public office to prevent favoritism or corruption.
They like things their way here. Since 2021 mayor Jessica Engelke has outright refused to modernize our charter rules to stop these abuses which makes this a terrible place to live.
Advanced Health Care receives our taxes to provide health and dental care. They are horrible. Pop up health care offices come and go here. Every year my healthcare provder has changed because people leave the area after a few years cause their is nothing here. If you need specific health care fron a specialist you need to drive an hour and half there and back to Eugene. Not a good place for seniors with failing health needs.
This is a 101 highway town that gets a huge amount of crime and drugs. Expect sirens sounding regularly during summer tourist months.
The school district has a 6/10. D rating. Students will struggle to try to keep up if they ever get into any state college.

Weather expect 8 months of high 10 to 25mph wind and rain. The grass and tree allergies are so bad 8 or more months a year expect constant runny nose and eyes, and sinus infections that make you teeth ache. I eat antihistamine pills like daily to survive. Expect discomfort or fatigue due to body inflammation ftom high humidty . If you have arthritis this is a not the place to be.

I have lived all over the United States and North Bend is the WORST place I have EVER LIVED.

City hall treats community members horribly while demanding high taxes and taking your property if you refuse to pay your tax money due to not receiving proper professional service assistance. Its extortion if you are not recieving professional service from city hall.

This city leadership team only cares about your money. They are not vested in serving the community members wants or needs ensuring we receive respectful, helpful professionally trained and montored staff.

The .city council hired our city administrator who refuses to ask us how he could serve us better. Suggestions made are thrown out. We are denied the opportunity to modernize our city rules updating our city's charter to include new accountability and transparency benchmarks for performance from this administrator.
This is a lawless town. No news outlets
No newspaper to alert the public of questionable conduct of the city officials or crime events.
The city refuses to update our charter to include a citizen police oversight committee. Our police only report to the city administrator and mayor. This is dishonest all other cities after the killing of George Flyod now have additional oversight of the police from community members.

We are forced to pay for a police captian and chief to sit in the office overseeing a two man per shift police force. Their salaries total over $250,000 plus benefits due to outdated city charters preventing these positions to be eliminated while condensing under one chief and one captian at the county level sheriff department who oversees the police substations within our city(s)This is how cities operated within Los Angeles county.

City council members refuse to address this huge waste of our taxes through any revision for our outdated charters.

Lastly, the county commissionor's office also don't care what you think or want. Looking at what is charged on my property taxes i see i am forced to pay money to the Port of Coos Bay. This is unacceptable. Los Angeles Long Beach port paid us contributing to the community through projects that benefited us. When I talked to any of the Commissioners about this injustice they support the Port not the community members.

I suggest you invest your money else where because you will be taxed to death to live here while being treated disrespectfully by city officials. Read Less
