On the face of it, it is lovely, underneath lies Fascism, and rampant corruption User Rating 1.5 rating By Anonymous ( May 01, 2019) There are some lovely people here, but they are generally not from the area. The local culture that controls who is allowed to keep their job, who is accepted by the community, and what laws and policies are in place, are corrupt greedy bigoted people. The school district and ...Read More the hospital have chased out quality employees and leaders who wanted to improve transparency and best practices. They were chased out for either wanting to clean up the corruption, or because they were gay, or because they were too liberal and pissed off a prominent family. Top school leaders have connections to the police and have been known to protect young men and fathers who either abuse women or are drug addicts, simply on the basis of who they know. Most area residents are family friendly, but at the same time, a number of them they drive recklessly on the beach and throw beer cans out the window as they go. Even many liberal residents fail to see the safety issues and environmental damage caused by allowing vehicles on the beach, fireworks, and bonfires. Dogs are supposed to be leashed, but most people, locals and visitors, do not follow this rule. Many folks do not pick up their dog mess. There is no one assigned to enforcing the driving laws on the beach. There is a group of volunteers who clean up the beaches, but it seems like most of these folks are from Portland and areas further afield. Hunters are allowed to hunt on the peninsula which seems rather unsafe seeing how far a stray bullet can travel. The area also is home to gun shops that advertise automatic guns. There is a high poverty rate and local rentals and housing is out of reach of most working people. A large number of homes sit empty for half the year while others are being snapped up to turn into Air B and B's. There is a small fishing and crabbing community of hard working folks, but many of the larger operations, are tied to the police and corruption in the area, even having judges in their pockets. Very , very affordable User Rating 4.5 rating By lbruce8039 ( Jan 08, 2018) First, the down side; It rains a lot in the winter, no major shopping in immediate area. Higher education opportunities are limited, small hospital with limited emergency services, and rental apartments are almost non existent. The local grocery stores carry a wide selection of i ...Read More tems, but are priced higher due to transport costs. The up side; Beautiful breaches, Lewis and Clark historic sites, Marsh's Free Museum, the finest seafood/shellfish in the US served at excellent restaurants. Property is CHEAP! They have many assisted living facilities, and labor costs are close to 50% of the state average, so the cost construction, housekeeping, and personal services are very low. Major shopping in Astoria (just 16 miles away) with no state sales tax. Read Less
