I moved to Colorado nearly four months ago and have enjoyed exploring various cities near my house. Today I traveled to the "city" of Lakewood, which I discovered to be an unfortunate misnomer. At first glance, Lakewood is your typical metropolitan suburb. Buses zip past, bustlin ...Read More
g pedestrians hurrying to destinations occupy the sidewalks, and an overall sense of unrest hangs in the air. This is merely a mask for the true heart of Lakewood - nature. To think I nearly wrote this city off as just another product of downtown overflow saddens me.
Lakewood is teeming with outdoor activities, including over 36 miles of trails catering to any walking, biking, hiking, or even horseback riding enthusiast. All ages, even furry friends, can appreciate 99 parks and open space areas to run, play, picnic, and witness breathtaking views of mountains and blue skies. There are even three reservoirs in Lakewood that visitors can enjoy. I would never have imagined that nestled in a sleepy city on the outskirts of Denver lies a plethora of adventure. I can't wait to take my family out to play in Lakewood.

Lakewood Colorado is a short 20-minute trip from downtown Denver. Located directly west on an interstate highway, its location provides easy access not only to the metropolitan area, but to the mountains. Several lakes and hiking and biking trails have made Lakewood a desirable area. Lakewood is also home to the 2,400-acre Hayden Park and Green Mountain, which is 6800 feet in altitude.
Lakewood is the home of the Colorado Mills Shopping Center, a large regional center with over 150 stores and restaurants. Colorado Mills is truly a shopper’s paradise. While Lakewood itself boasts several breweries, brewpubs and food trucks, the most unusual restaurant is Casa Bonita. It is one of a kind to say the least. They have become a landmark and “must do” in the area. Ask yourself, when was the last time you watched indoor cliff divers while eating a Mexican dinner and listening to mariachi music?
If you’re interested in the history of the area, visit the Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park. Here the history and heritage of the area is showcased and there are over a dozen buildings and displays that will capture your imagination. For those who are fans of trains from a bygone era, visit the Colorado Railroad Museum. This family friendly outdoor museum at the edge of Lakewood is the Colorado home of Thomas the Tank Engine and the Polar Express. Vintage cars and steam engines are on display in the railyard. If your interests lean more towards natural history and geology, make a trip to Dinosaur Ridge. There, you can walk where the dinosaurs once roamed. This is one of the largest surviving fields of outdoor fossil and footprints.
Lakewood is best known for the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, another natural geologic wonder nestled into an eons-old rock formation. The amphitheater there has been host to a variety of musical acts and superstars. It is also home to an Easter Sunday sunrise service that attracts hundreds of worshippers annually. For a more urban adventure or if you would prefer an activity that is less outdoor and physical, the Colorado Mills Shopping Center is home to a regional collection of stores, retail outlets, and restaurants.
Lakewood is above all a family-oriented community. The median home value is approximately $255,000. The cost of living in Lakewood is less than that of metropolitan Denver. In addition, it is the home of a highly rated school system for both the elementary schools and the high school. In addition, there are three institutions of higher learning - Red Rocks Community College, Colorado Christian University and the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. There are also regional theaters based in Lakewood, along with the Lakewood Cultural Center.
