We've lived in Kinnelon for many years now. Haven't been able to make many friends, I'm progressive Democrat, most here aren't. My daughters had a very good education, as NJ goes, but were never really accepted into the rather snooty non-inclusive groups that dominate the school ...Read More
s here. It's discrimination by income, mostly (we're not wealthy). It's a physically beautiful place to live, no doubt about that, but the emotional environment of the town is way too privileged and exclusive. School board meetings don't have threats of physical violence, but they do have too much about "free my kids from wearing masks" and other former-president-oriented Republican garbage. Shopping is great, the town is convenient to all of Northern NJ and only a 25 mile drive or bus ride to Manhattan. Not a lot of good restaurants, nightlife is close to none in the immediate vicinity, but the one or two good restaurants we do have are generally excellent, and many nightlife venues and good eateries are available within a half-hour drive. There are multiple beautiful parks or recreation spots; local NJ snow parks are nearby; but not many places to just swim, in spite of the fact that this is a lakeland area. Nearly all swimming is in member-only lake communities, so again, exclusivity. So I guess I'd sum up by saying that if you make $500K a year this is the place for you. For other people and Progressives, I'd say, not so much.

The Real Version of the Garden State

Living in Kinnelon is everything you would expect in the Garden State. Kinnelon is not the New Jersey you see in the travel brochures, far from the white-sand beaches of the Jersey Shore or the congestion of cities like Newark and Trenton. Kinnelon is only a couple miles from the ...Read More
border of Upstate New York, an entirely different experience than the rest of the Garden State.
Although the best areas in Kinnelon are the outdoors, we have our share of excellent restaurants and shopping too. If I want to drive to the outlet malls, I hit the New Jersey Turnpike, if I want high-end shopping, Manhattan is just over the bridge. The Garden State Parkway is a quick ride to Atlantic City and the rest of the beach communities along the Atlantic coast.
This area has lots of mountains, and in the winter I can get to a number of the best ski slopes in the country in minutes. My neighborhood is nestled away from the traffic you see closer to the state lines.
