I was a resident of The Heights neighborhood in Jersey City, New Jersey and absolutely loved living there. While the neighborhood itself is not for everybody, it would be hard for anybody to complain too much about where the neighborhood is located. The Heights is a short Path ri ...Read More
de from the heart of Manhattan and an even shorter Path ride or walk to Hoboken. For those who work in Manhattan but do not make six figures, The Heights is an affordable area with a short to commute to the World Trade Center. My commute to work from The Heights was actually shorter than my commute from Queens. Moreover, the view of the New York City skyline from The Heights is fantastic. All of this comes in the package of a far quitter neighborhood than the typical Manhattan or Brooklyn neighborhood and at far cheaper rent costs.
Central Avenue is the heart of the neighborhood, and there are a number of shops and restaurants located on it. Make sure to check out the Great Wall if you like Chinese takeout as much as I do. The place does not look all that great, but the food is absolutely delicious. While there is not really that much to do in the neighborhood, its proximity to other areas of Jersey City, Hoboken and New York City makes it an ideal location for those who like to go out. All of the great restaurants, bars and clubs in Hoboken and New York City are a short trip away.
Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of living in The Heights is that rent costs are very low compared to most of the rest of the area. You can save several hundred per month when choosing to live in The Heights over Hoboken or some of the pricier areas of Jersey City. At times the neighborhood can look a bit seedy, but I never encountered any problems while there. My neighbors were friendly, and the area of The Heights that I lived in was fairly pleasant. That being said, The Heights is not for everybody. If you are a bit snobby or do not like the idea of having to travel more than five minutes to get to a cool bar or nice restaurant, you will probably not enjoy living in this neighborhood.
