City on the Edge of Forever 2 rating By Anonymous ( Oct 05, 2020) Cool town. I lived in the dorms at the community college there for two years. It's a vast desert plain that looks like a wasteland. But I liked it. Very dry usually, but it does get summer monsoon rains. It's hot in the summer and kind of cold in the winter. Regardless, 5 days ou ...Read More t of 7, the wind is blowing 30 knots gusting to 50. You can't really wear hats here or expect to maintain a hairdo if outside. Very weird storms in the spring and summer. The sat towers go down often leaving many without cellphones for several days. That happened more than once in the two years I lived there. Lots of meth heads; a very serious problem there. Zia Park horse track is there with thoroughbred and quarter-horse racing from August until December. There's a Walmart and a shopping district, several chain restaurants, and two colleges. Lots of crime, especially on the south side of town. Oil wells everywhere. Halliburton has business there. Lots of oil field jobs. Very high rent in Hobbs because the landlords take advantage of the high-waged oil workers. Police are pretty cool here, never gave me or my friends any problems, but I have heard otherwise from other people. Lubbock TX is about 2 hours away, Midland-Odessa, Texas is about 45 miles. Carlsbad Caverns is close. New Mexico is probably the most scenic state imo. I could walk around Hobbs in the day and night without getting hassled by anyone, but I stayed away from certain parts of town, but overall, it's not that bad. But the Walmart there is definitely the worst Walmart I ever seen in all of my travels in America. It is poorly-managed and most always packed with people with few workers on duty. Read Less

Buying a home in Hobbs can be pretty affordable, as the average home price is a little bit cheaper than the state average. You can probably find a nice ranch style house for around $100,000 or maybe a little more. If you're retired and looking for a comfortable place to settle down, Hobbs is probably a good choice. As far as the local job market, Hobbs is so-so. You'll be able to find a decent job, but the city doesn't have a lot of opportunities in the way of higher education. Read Less
