Living in Hattiesburg, MS for 10 years has been a journey. There are some neighborhoods where I don't like to go, but if I visit the downtown area, I feel like I've stepped back in time. There are older houses, and the shops along the streets are quaint. Many of the shops are own ...Read More
ed by people who sell their handmade crafts instead of bringing in items from larger supply chains.
When I first moved to the city from Utah, I noticed that there are several attractions that were outdoors, and there are numerous activities to do that are based on the history of the area. The Armed Forces Museum is a place to visit if you enjoy learning about the various departments in the military. There are memorials set up in the museum for those who have lost their lives while in the military as well as a history of how the departments began.
The Hattiesburg Zoo is another attraction where I like to go if I want to get out of the house. It's rather small compared to some zoos I have visited, but there are some adorable animals that you can see up close. You can also see some of the animals fed by the staff if you get there at the right time. Some of the attractions I have seen deal with African American history. There is an art gallery that features pieces done by African Americans who have lived in the area. Many of the restaurants serve foods that have a southern feel. It's very common to go to a restaurant and order a plate of fried chicken with a side of macaroni and cheese or even collard greens.
