A Great Community for Raising Children 4 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 01, 2021) I lived in Hanford while I was stationed at NAS Lemoore from 2017-2020. Hanford is a charming city with a population of about 50,000 residences. I lived on the Northside in a beautiful neighborhood called Stonecrest. Very good schools nearby Pioneer elementary, Pioneer middle, Ha ...Read More nford Christian Academy and Hanford west high school (www.niche.com to look up best schools). The neighborhood was very diverse and very safe. Neighbors were very friendly and looked out for each other. Alot of police, correctional officers and military lived in this neighborhood. Hanford primarily consisted of 11th and 12th Avenue for shopping areas. 10th Avenue was older but nicer neighborhood. Downtown was beautiful and remind me of the town that was in the movie Back to the Future. The south side isn't bad either but you have more of the crime occurring on that end. Overall, it was a great town and it was in the middle. Visalia was the next biggest city which was east 18 miles (very nice with very good schools), Lemoore was 14 miles west (avoid living there, bad schools, drug infested and poor with no amenities or shopping centers) and Fresno (population 500,000+ & gangland) about 28 miles north of Hanford. If you want to raise your family in a nice, safe charming town where you don't have to travel far for shopping, Hanford is where you want to be! Read Less

In May we have a farmers market downtown that runs until around the end of October. We have unique buildings here, one we call "the castle." Years ago it used to house the towns criminals. Legend has it that one was a female who climbed the stairs and hung herself and locals proclaim she haunts the building. People has stated they have seen her, great folklore. Very creepy. Now it is our nightlife. A very nice jazz playing bar is there now.

Downtown still has its older buildings that have been kept very nice. The downtown park is beautiful with its huge fountain in the middle. Across the street we have a 50's ice cream joint that has not changed since the 1050's. And they make their own ice cream there. Its to die for! Superior Ice cream is also sold in our local stores. Maple nut, pineapple sherbet are just a couple of favorites. The also serve really nice lunches there. We also have a Renaissance Faire in September every year. Lots of family things here as well as the Kings Fair, and the race track.

We have a mall that is getting smaller and smaller by year. Most of the time shopping is done in nearby Fresno or Visalia. If you go to Fresno for shopping, do it during the day. There are a zillion great places to eat too. There is also an outlet 30 minutes away in Tulare where you can find all your favorite stores and a great movie theater there.

Homes are far cheaper here than anywhere. The yards are very big, and you can afford a home with a pool here for around $270,000! The schools are great. Pioneer school is one of the best. Its in the west of northern Hanford, and its a charter school, but one of the towns best elementary schools. You will want to live in the northern part of town. But can find some decent home just about anywhere but in the southern part of town. Thats the welfare area of town and where all the gang bang wannabees are.

We have ample shopping, people are very friendly, lots of churches as it is a family oriented town. Within an hours drive you will be in the Sequioa National Park, 2 hours, Pismo Beach, or Monterey. We are centralized for whatever your need is, snow, beach, heat, lakes, forest or shopping you will find it here.

We also have a Jr. College here, College of the Sequioas. Really nice college.

The drawback? It can get upwards to 105 degrees in the summer! Very pleasant falls, and mild winters. We are very seasonal. But there are places to go like the Plundge for a nice swim when its warm, or in your own backyard pool. This is hometown America folks, a really nice place to raise a family that is comfortably affordable. Read Less
