Review Gibbstown
Nice Little Town

I've lived in this town for three years, and I think it's underrated. It is a small town that is like a "company" town - many of the residents work or have worked for the industrial employers in the area, such as the refineries in Paulsboro or the closed Dow plant, and others. It ...Read More
is a blue-collar town at its core, with plenty of white-collar professionals as well. The architecture is mixed, but, for the most part, the properties are well-maintained. People who grew up in Gibbstown love their town and many choose to stay when they mature and form their own families. The community is tight-knit and everyone seems to know each other. It can be a little intimidating to an outsider at first, but people are friendly and proud of their town, and are generally accepting. The police presence is well-respected and the town is well-patrolled. There are some interesting parks to explore, a decent, fenced dog park, a sports area with all sorts of courts and fields for play, and the town is kind of buffered by the thousands of acres of wetlands and fenced off woods (which seem to be owned by utility companies). This prevents a lot of additional building in the area, and give it a sleepy town feel, although the main street is well-traveled by cars and trucks during business hours. Amenities are ok, not terribly exciting, but decent - a couple of pizza places, a BBQ place, a good local bar on Broad St with excellent beers and very good food, a mom/pop deli on Harmony (good breakfasts), a few doctor offices, a few dollar stores, an "OK" ShopRite, and an excellent PetValu pet store, among a few other shops and some chain fast food options. Nearby towns have other options, close by. Finer dining can be had in Mullica Hill and Logan Twp, all close. Once you leave town it's all farmland, and boy oh boy! How refreshing that is. People living 5 miles away in Camden County have no idea how close cows, miniature and regular horses, and pigs are. Fields of corn, asparagus, soybeans, peach orchards. Driving to Target takes a little time but it's rather pleasant to do so without a million lights and other cars. You get used to this slower pace, and it's nice. Add that to the fact that Gibbstown property taxes are pretty low (and there ARE homes not in the flood zone, just not as many - my home does not require flood insurance). The town government seems to care about its citizens. Rules are there but they won't lose their mind if you have a yard sale on a Sunday - no permits required any time for that. One thing I that would prevent me living in town is the high school, with is Paulsboro High School, but the grade and middle schools are fine, and I'm sure there are private options for high school if you have children. Anyway, Gibbstown is a nice, little town - perhaps even a hidden gem to the person who wants a nice, affordable home in a regular little town. Equidistant to Philly and Wilmington, at the base of the Commodore Barry Bridge, great and easy access to 295, 130, 95, 476.
