I moved here from a big city 30 years ago to work at Minnesota North, a 2-year residential college that attracts students from all over the US for its natural resources programs and athletics. The natural beauty of the area is incredible and people come to canoe, fish, hike, boat ...Read More
, x-country ski, snowmobile etc. The summer is heaven. The winter is long.
The community is mixed regarding liberal and conservative but they all band together when needed. Some locals do not seem overly welcoming but most people are incredibly kind and generous. The town has little ethnic diversity except for the college students who are warmly welcomed. The town has a significant LGBTQ population. Ely also attracts a strong artistic population and culture. The average age is around 50 but the population of 25-35 year olds has been increasing rapidly.
The school system struggles with low enrollment and funds.
The town is a tourist attraction and with that comes lots of nice shops and restaurants. I was skeptical about living here at first because I had never lived in a small town, but within a year I came to love it. I wouldn’t have wanted to raise my kids anywhere else. They were safe and had every opportunity I could have imagined.
The medical services are fantastic with very skilled professionals. The town is safe regarding crime. You will find some petty crime and occasional domestic violence with regard to violent crime.
Ely is the perfect place if you are community oriented, don’t need an active night life, want to raise a family or retire, and love the outdoors.
