El Paso, TX: The Sun City

El Paso is the sixth largest city in Texas. With over 680,000 people living in the city, it combines with Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and Las Cruces, New Mexico, to form the largest international metropolitan area in the Western Hemisphere. Combined these cities, often called Paso del Norte, also makes the largest bilingual and binational work force in the Western Hemisphere. El Paso is the county seat of El Paso County.

More than 70 Fortune 500 companies call this city home. Seven of the top 10 businesses in El Paso are call centers. Education also makes up an important part of the economy with the University of Texas at El Paso being the second largest university in the United States where the majority of students are of Mexican-American descent. Over 135,000 people directly or indirectly work for Fort Bliss. This large military base covers more ground than the state of Rhode Island. Additionally, many people living in El Paso work at more than 300 factories located in Juarez with most of these factories organized under Mexico’s Maquiladora Program. Traditionally, the city has enjoyed one of the lowest unemployment rates in the United States. That should not change anytime soon.

While summers can be brutal in El Paso, the city receives more than 297 days of sun each year leading the city to its nickname as The Sun City. People living in El Paso enjoy a lower than average cost of living with rental prices often being less than $600 a month and home prices being less than the national average.
