El Paso is the sixth largest city in Texas. With over 680,000 people living in the city, it combines with Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and Las Cruces, New Mexico, to form the largest international metropolitan area in the Western Hemisphere. Combined these cities, often called Paso del Norte, also makes the largest bilingual and binational work force in the Western Hemisphere. El Paso is the county seat of El Paso County.

Education also makes up an important part of the economy with the University of Texas at El Paso being the second largest university in the United States where the majority of students are of Mexican-American descent.
