When I first saw the Grandale area, it was 1974. It was a lovely area and there were no noticeable burnt out, run down, abandoned etc. houses. I moved on Abington in the spring of 1988 and lived there for 13 years. During that time, I watched it deteriorate extremely fast. Houses ...Read More
were being burnt down rapidly, sometimes as many as three a month on the same block. Homeowners were steadily moving out while young renters were steadily moving in. They cared nothing about the property and neighbor relationships were turning into the Hatfields and the McCoys. Coolidge Elementary school had 980 students and my kids were not allowed to go there because we lived after the 12000 block of Abington. However, I did some maneuvering to get them in there because I was a single mother with not transportation and could not have all three of them going to separate schools. The school's last year had in 2006 had only 292 students. What a surprise, and again it shouldn't have been because all of the houses were gone by then. During the 80's and the 90's they were disappearing on the north side of Plymouth and afterwards, that same thing started happening on the south side. Burglaries were always on the rise and shooting was heard almost on a regular basis during the wee hours of the morning, especially during the summer months. Very little help was given at the 6th precinct with any situation. O'Shea Recreation Center and the grounds around it was always a hot mess. The tennis court was abandoned along with the are for outside games such as racquetball, the baseball field and nearby swings and sandbox. I was a member of the Grandale Presbyterian Church of the Master and they are no longer there. The building still is but has lost its glamour. There are no groceries stores in walking distance in the area. I'm grateful that my grandfather did not have to see his house firebombed. So sad.
