The Hilltop areas include streets like W. Broad Street and Hague Avenue. It got its name from the angle of the slopes of the area that head into the Scioto River. The area neighborhoods included in this area are Highland West, Westgate, Columbia Park and many others. Jack Sensenbrenner the 46th Mayor of Columbus is from this area, as is famous singer Nancy Wilson.
There are nearly 67,000 people that call this area home. Most of the population is Caucasian and African American. However, there is some Hispanic and Asian population as well. This area was once known as Sullivant's Hill. A deal made with federal government, to sell the land that belonged to the Sullivan family, and build the Columbus State Hospital for the Insane, happened in the 18th century. Though the hospital closed in the late 1980's, there are still 4 cemeteries around the area that patients were buried in. In 1997, ODOT facilities were moved to the location of the old hospital.
Sullivant Avenue is named after the family who first settled here, though all the decedents have moved on. However, Sullivant is one of the worst sections of town. In fact, it is not safe to walk down the streets alone here in the day and definitely not at night. There are plenty of unsavory characters hanging around and crime rates for this section are at all-time highs.
One of the more affluent areas is Westgate. Glenwood Park is in this section and attracts people of all ages. It has welcoming landscape and is a great place to bring children to play. With a neighborhood association and a gardening club, those who enjoy the finer thing in life congregate here.
With the close proximity to the downtown area and I-70, getting around is never a problem. There are numerous restaurants, including both fast food and fine dining to choose from. Grocery stores are on every corner, including major chains and smaller independent owned companies.
Sure it has good and bad, but the entire area still has charm and charisma. It is filled with quaint shops, close to the happening parts of town and is economically priced.
