If you're thinking of moving here, keep looking User Rating 2 rating By Anonymous ( Feb 02, 2020) I moved here from out of state- most everyone in Cedar is from out of state, mostly from Vegas or California. There are some REAL CONCERNS here.

- Complete lack of diversity and culture. If you have children and you are trying to expand their horizons, this is NOT the place. The
...Read More University has one museum, the selection leaves much to be desired.
- If you have children, DON'T SUBJECT THEM TO IRON COUNTY SCHOOLS. Especially if they are on an IEP or 504. The schools barely pay their teachers, so the teachers barely teach. The schools don't want to enforce IEP'S.
- Weird zoning, no zoning. Congrats! You just bought a $285k house? Great... Someone with a single-wide bought a plot next to you and is currently hoarding it out. Bonus! Barely no HOA or Code enforcement. You'll have to just watch the hoard fester.
- Ah, you want the American dream? Not in Cedar City. The average wage without a college degree is around $11/ hour. More if you work graveyard shift. With a college degree, you might be looking at $14-18/ hour. The average home price here is $275k. The average rent is $1200/ month for a single family home. You'll pay more than national average for gas and groceries. It's paycheck to paycheck living here.
- Want to go to Target? That's in St George. What about a children's museum? St. George. A splash pad for the kids? St. George. Costco? St. George. Olive Garden, for heaven's sake? St. George. Oh,yeah- and that drive will be life-threatening in the rain, fog, or snow and ice. So- you probably shouldn't go at night or 7 months out of the year.
- Do you want a job? So does everybody else here. The unemployment rate is higher than reported, because half the town is students, and they go home for the summer. So that job you want? Everyone else wants it too. And they probably know someone who works there. So, you know, you aren't getting it.
- The town refuses to believe how fast and furious it's growing. So, the traffic is dangerous for drivers and pedestrians.
- How about those weird Utah laws?
- The two stars I gave Cedar City was for SUU. If you are coming just to go to school, take advantage of everything they have to offer. It's a great place. Then get your degree and get out because there's no way you'll afford living here. Read Less
Nice place but still Utah User Rating 3 rating By Rhea ( Jun 15, 2017) I've lived here for about 12 years now, went to high school and college here. It's home to Southern Utah University and at first glance it's sort of a college town but once you get out of downtown, which is really only a couple square miles, it is really just a rural, ranching, M ...Read More ormon town. There is a church on practically every corner and the majority of the population is LDS and the small population who isn't is either non-practicing, here for college, or a random person like myself. It's great if you have want to raise a family and you happen to be LDS otherwise it's hard to make it here. It's very cliquish but it has gotten a little better the last few years. They are building a LDS temple here which will open this summer and will only increase the already predominate culture. A few amenities have opened lately like Ross, TJ maxx, and a Sportmans warehouse. There is the usual string of fast food places, Chili's, Applebee's, and a few local places. But for shopping and dining your better off going to St. George about 30 minutes south. The weather here gets cold and there is a ski resort about 35 minutes away but it is nice since St. George has low desert climate so you can warm up for the day. Jobs are hard to get here and even so the pay is often not very good. Getting a good job has a lot to do with who you are in this town and which church ward you go to. There are a couple of festivals here in the summer, like Shakespeare and the Summer games which brings some tourism. There are National Parks like Zion, Bryce, Arches, Grand Staircase not too far away which also bring tourists. Overall the scenery here is beautiful, the university is decent and you still have decent town; but people can be rude if you don't fit in (your not Mormon), housing can be difficult to find, jobs are hard to find and wages are far from decent.
