Big little city 5 rating By Anonymous ( Dec 24, 2021) We moved to Burlington from Oregon less than two months ago. We are in our mid-sixties and lived in Oregon/California our whole lives, raising children there and having careers. We moved to Burlington upon retirement because we are active, older people. We like the university vib ...Read More e and the New England vibe. But mostly, we love that billboards are not allowed and street advertising is restricted. Our small farm in Oregon was threatened by wildfires every year and when the local timber company clear cut our favorite hills surrounding our farm, it was time to leave. Burlington reminds us of Portland OR in the '60's. It is not a town for people who like to be inside though. Long winters mean you have to get outside to endure. Great place for active people, having nearby skiing. Love it! Read Less

And it is expensive, Beverly Hills expensive.
Everyone wants "affordable housing", but the city has made building any nearly impossible because nobody wants any new buildings???
Burlington Vermont is postcard perfect, but postcards do not show reality. The quaint farmer's markets are actually highly controlled monopolies that score "cuteness" over product quality, and play political favorites with the potential vendors... same goes with Church Street Market area.
Burlington, Vermont has more oppressed people than anywhere else I've been. Everyone in Burlington is a victim of some kind of tragedy that demands your full attention all the time. It gets tiresome.
Vermont is a horrible place to try to open a retail business, they don't have sales tax on clothing (which seems like a good thing) but the city and state both tax retail display area. Your taxes aren't based on what you DID sell, your taxes are based on what you COULD sell. Not business friendly at all.
Burlington is chock full of people who wake up every day and think: "How could life be made more expensive and difficult for my neighbors? ", then they go about trying to make it happen. Burlington is a deceptive place, I thought I liked living there, even after I left. It took a few years of living in a normal place to realize exactly how toxic Burlington is.
It is a college town, but Burlington, Vermont doesn't want anyone to be successful in life... Burlington wants it's residents to wash out in life.

Many community events and attractions take place on the lake shore. Sailboats dot Lake Champlain in summer. Ferry boats make regular crossings all year around. A well used, meandering bike path runs through the city of Burlington. Church Street's pedestrian mall is home to a variety of restaurants and boutiques. An underground mall, accessible from Church Street, has additional restaurants and shopping. The atmosphere invites visitors and locals to linger over a cup of Green Mountain coffee or a Ben and Jerry's ice cream cone.

Burlington is a vital, vibrant city. Events like the Chew-Chew Festival fill the calendar. The Chew-Chew festival is an annual celebration of local food and beverages that the entire community enjoys. Summer brings beach days. Fall is a glorious riot of color. Winter can be brutally cold and snowy. Spring arrives sometime in April with the red-winged blackbirds. In Burlington, you enjoy the best of all seasons.
