Love it here 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Mar 25, 2022) I love this city. Very quiet, small town vibe, with barely any crime. Yet, at the same time, it has the amenities, schools, and attractions a small city has. JC is an outdoorsman's heaven: Lakes, rivers, mountains, cliffs, rolling hills, and just about everything else can be foun ...Read More d in the Johnson City limits. There's a smaller but still reasonable of indoor activities: A couple trampoline parks, arcades, a bowling alley, some museums... just the basics. Schools are awesome with multiple options, public and private. Johnson City has a massive amount of unique and delicious restaurants: you can never make it to all of them. Vietnamese, Thai - Hell, we have a Peruvian Rotisserie Joint! Crime here isn't nearly as bad as AreaVibes makes it seem. Violent crime is basically nonexistent in most neighborhoods. Property crime is relatively common, though, so you will want to lock your doors at night.

There isn't really a hood or ghetto here, despite the city's size. However, I recommend you stay away from these main roads when choosing where to live: Market/Main Street, Unaka/Watauga Ave and Roan Street South of Science Hill. There are some sketchy patches near those roads, however it is still feasible to live in those places. I hope you consider moving here and joining our community! Read Less
One of the better cities in Tennessee 4.5 rating By shockinghillaryquote ( Apr 19, 2017) Johnson City is by far one of the better cities in Tennessee, and easily outranks its nearby cities, Bristol and Kingsport. Low cost of living, good homes, generally nice layout of the city, and some downtown revitalization in the old brick buildings. There's a pretty good select ...Read More ion of restaurants, as well. The city also has two health food stores. One thing I noticed is that despite having a large college, ESTU, there is hardly any "student" cultural life nearby. There's a pizza place, Kinght's Pizza, and that's about it. You would never really guess there was a college nearby based on the nightlife. The college itself, however, seems quite nice. Overall, it's a good city. Not that exciting, but a nice layout, green grass, well-maintained, and safe. Read Less
Johnson City: Where the Mountains Meet Modern Times 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Feb 16, 2012) I have lived in Johnson City, Tennessee for about 15 years now, and I love it. The city is home to East Tennessee University, which is where both my husband and I work. The area provides residents with numerous job opportunities, many of which are associated with the university. ...Read More At the same time, it also has the appeal of a small mountain town.

If you are into nature like I am, there is so much to do in Johnson City and the general area. There are several lakes for fishing and boating, hiking trails, parks and much more. Roan Mountain State Park is one of my favorite places to visit. I'm also an amateur photographer and love taking pictures of the mountains that surround Johnson City. On weekends, my husband and I love to take the short drive to the North Carolina and Virginia borders to explore the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The university attracts a variety of people from all walks of life. This has brought a lot of culture to the city, which means lots of great food. Alta Cucina is an amazing Italian restaurant. Cootie Brown's is another one of our favorites that offers an eclectic mix of food options. Just don't forget to try their key lime pie for dessert. Other things that make me glad I chose to move to Johnson City include the excellent public school system and the number of fun music and cultural festivals. It seems like there is always something to do, especially in the spring and summer and around Christmastime. The Blue Plum festival, which takes place downtown, is one of our favorites. It's a great time to walk the streets and visit the local shops and artists. Read Less
