Zanesville is a small busy town. It has good areas and bad areas. There is no homeless on the streets, but avoid the poor areas. The life and good shopping and services are on the north. While the south has more crime. Most people that live in Zanesville, work in Zanesville. Some ...Read More
commute to Columbus for work. Although Columbus is 1hr away, it is the capital bustling with 1-hour long stopped traffic on rush hours. Many people live on the skirt of Columbus to find a balanced life and more peace. Other towns a big bigger are Newark, Buckeye Lake, Hebron, Granville (which is home to Denison University). Zanesville has a branch for Ohio University, offering affordable high education for this small town students. Also Zane State College, in Zanesville offers technical high quality education for Zanesville with results very affordable to low income high school students that will become the next generation of workforce in Zanesville and surrounding areas. Zanesville, Cambridge, Newark are all packed with manufacturers that offer employment, and likely offer relocation help, since it is understood high quality educated professionals may come form outside of Zanesville. New Concord is another small village 15 min from Zanesville, is home to Muskingum University. This town will have a population of teachers and university professors. This is a very tight community and they will treat outsiders as outsiders.
Zanesville is growing and it is strong in the medical workforce and nurses. The Genesis Hospital is awarded nationally but I see a bloom of excessive medical offices and private practices. There is no much shopping, but the basic needs, a Walmart on the north and one of the south, one Kroger and one Aldi. A mall that is in decline with cinema., Lots of antique stores, with very old things for sale that I would trash. Housing is affordable. Preferable I will look into north Zanesville, Norwich, new concord and towards Newark. Stay away from the South. Zanesville high School offers several opportunities for the dedicated students. John Glenn high school is rates a great but it is rather strict. This is an area with some public transportation, but still highly car dependent. No amenities. Go to Columbus if you want night life or go to the zoo. Museum in Zanesville are small and full of vases and ceramics. We go to hocking hills for a outdoors adventures. Thankful for the YMCA gym. Really, there is no much happening in Zanesville. Homes are bought, flipped and resold, multiple times. It is always the same old homes built in 1950 - 1960 that get flipped 5x 6 times to get profit. Hope this helps.

Zanesville, Ohio is a small city located a few hours east of Columbus. It can be described as not quite a small town, but also not a big city. The economy of Zanesville will leave you wanting more as jobs are hard to come by. The downtown Putnam area is full of deteriorating one- ...Read More
way streets and old buildings. Crime is becoming more of a problem each year and the police do not really seem to be doing anything about it. Low employment prospects and increase in rental properties are unfortunately the recipe for a city in decline.
The city is decently culturally diverse, although nothing comparable to other cities in Ohio like Columbus, Dayton, or Toledo. The housing market within the city is in decline as well even with property taxes remaining reasonable. The economy is very slow in this area and will continue to be slow unless more manufacturing and skilled labor jobs are created.
Overall, Zanesville is a decent option for those who don't require gainful employment and are looking for something cheap. The city is not for everyone, however, and you may be better off and happier spending a few extra bucks and heading west to Columbus.
