Was Once a Vibrant Small City User Rating 2 rating By Anonymous ( Apr 27, 2019) This small city was once an excellent city to relocate to. It was very dependent on locally owned paper business. Since the Mead family has given up ownership, outside owners have made life difficult, it has been a 20 year change. The people are goodhearted but stressed. The sch ...Read More ools were extremely good, but the lower tax base affects the population of both students and available staff. For a small place, they have an exceptionally good PAC centre, created through effort of local teachers, town leaders and an exceptional financial gift from a Mead family member that had never lived there but honored his family history in this way, truly generous and indicative of the spirit the citizens used to have. Families have created and maintained an ice facility right next to PAC center. Hockey is big in this sports loving city. The rink is very well managed and offers an outlet for the children in ice related sport. The schools have many classes of 30 or more students in better schools, lower sizes in some. Civility has declined , Walmart is the only major store there. Local small businesses in gifts and food gamely try to carry on. Liquor stores and bars do well. It is a refuge to old people and actively recruits them, as they have dependable income of sorts. Chain drug stores survive. Houses are DIRT CHEAP. A $250,000home in Stevens Point, a nearby city is about $140,000 in Wisconsin Rapids. Commuters live in Wisconsin Rapids but work, shop, attend the arts, and so on in nearby towns. Of course, houses are not an investment and will have poor resale. You choose. Park system is very nice, water activities are plentiful, nearby small town cranberry businesses are booming but do not pay well for regular labor, downtown used to be exciting but now doesn't exist, mall is being reused for older people center , not torn down. Second mall has just lost Shopko, its only large anchor. Primarily chain store restaurants and bars with food with couple exceptions. If you are very old, like sedateness, love observing nature and pretty water and do not mind traveling to 20-25 miles for any variety in shopping, dining, entertainment (outside of local say 10 year old dancers or youth hockey or Jr. High ball game) or selection, this is a nice out of the way place to live. But there are trade offs. We all once adored this town , so maybe if you never knew what it could be you wouldn't mind this quiet , elder haven of a spot. Read Less
Wisconsin Rapids, WI User Rating 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( May 16, 2018) Wisconsin Rapids, WI - The Heart of Cranberry Country
My family and I moved to the city of Wisconsin Rapids, WI in late September last year. During the time of our move, we had the wonderful opportunity to see and smell the cranberries in season. Living here in Wisconsin Rapids w
...Read More e found out that it is famous for being in close to where cranberries grow along the river. We also later that year had the opportunity to see how electrifying the community is; the annual ice skating and snowmobiling activities with my family was so much fun. Shopping is just minutes away and is always fun filled.

The school system here is great and the community really comes together and supports one another. This city has a mid-western charm about it that can not be beat. From watching the local birds and wildlife to experiencing the famous Wisconsin cheese products; everything here seems so enjoyable and family oriented. Occasionally, my husband and I go out for a night of dining and sometimes we stop at the local Ho-Chunk Gaming Nekoosa gaming facility. One of the best areas to go in Wisconsin Rapids is Rubi Reds; here you can taste, pick, and enjoy delicious and sweet cranberries. Another place to go is Blu Play Café, here the family can dine and play games. Blu Play Café is a great family outing location. Read Less
