I resided in White Rock for ten years, departing in 2018. I was fortunate enough to arrive before the development-mad mayor Wayne Baldwin arrived on the scene, who chose to strip mine away all semblances of White Rock's quaint and quiet charm. Prior to his arrival, White Rock ha ...Read More
d been the exception to the lugubrious lower mainland rule of avarice-driven overdevelopment. You couldn't pay me to live there today, as it's now indistinguishable from everywhere else in the lower mainland: crowded, busy, increasing crime, and expensive. If you work on the other side of the river, your commute will soon make you insane, as the traffic now backs up many, many kilometres before the Tunnel. Your ticket to admission, whether buying or renting, is astronomical. Crypt-like basement suites are the rental norm, and a one-bedroom will set you back almost $2K/ a month. A million dollars will almost buy you a nondescript, rundown shack that needs extensive repairs. There is an active rail line running along the beachfront, and the passing BNSF locomotives , rolling stock (along with the locomotive's horn) are always jarring punctuation to your days. In the summers everyone within 100km will make their way to Marine Drive every day, effectively making the seaside a no-go zone one season per year. The average income of the residents is extremely high, as you'll soon discover after a drive through the area. Restaurants abound on the strip, and a few of them are passably acceptable. Few restaurants seem to last for long, so the changing variety in menus is a welcome addition. Your immediate shopping needs are easily met in a massive host of local malls. it's the fall/winter/spring seasons when WR really shines, as you can get around far easier, actually go for a nice stroll along the wharf without having to share the experience with thousands of others. Ultimately, White Rock has changed sp dramatically since my time there that I cannot recommend this location anymore. In fact, all of my friends who lived there as long- or longer-than I, felt identically, with my last friend to leave putting his 2.5 million dollar seafront property up for sale this year. All of these friends were either businessmen, and engineers, so that should give you some insight into the changing character of the area, as these people now find White Rock to be undesirable.
