White Plains Reviews

Write a review about White Plains Tell people what you like or don't like about White Plains…
Snotty, You Say? Yes, but No. 4 rating By Anonymous ( Apr 23, 2019) I was born in Canada, grew up in Oregon and have lived most of my life in NYC. Having come to White Plains four years ago, I would have to agree that the people here are more judgmental than in NYC. But that's where the agreement ends. To claim that black people are "confined" to ...Read More "two high rises in the worst streets of the city" is totally wrong. In the first place, black people own houses here and live all over the city. Second, what exactly defines the "worst streets of the city"? Some would say crime, but as Michelle Alexander has shown us, "crime" is usually cultural shorthand for black people.

I understand that being a schoolteacher in Westchester is going to put you in contact with one of the snobbiest factions in White America -- self-involved parents -- but that experience is only one among many in White Plains.

Here's one of the great things about White Plains: it isn't that white. One million people live here, and a third of the people I see every day aren't white. Sometimes I'm the only white person riding home on the bus from the Metro North (I work in NYC), and that's a great feeling, to be surrounded by diversity and not just people who look like you. I live in a condo where two different buses stop in front of my door, a 24-hour pharmacy is a block away and everything you need is within walking distance.

Yes, I've noticed that it can be difficult for an artist to make friends here, and my NYC-weaned hipster mode of dress makes me look like an outsider here. But in the cold Greyhound bus depot of life, who gives a damn when the cost of living in a one-bedroom with your wife is dirt cheap, everything is within walking distance, transportation is effortless and diversity is all around you? The occasional lunatic will stroll past saying or doing something eccentric, but if that bothers you, then why the hell are you in NYS?

If you're comfortable in your skin and don't find yourself trawling for approval; if you would like to live in a place with trees and far less pollution that is reasonably near the City; if you love being around people whose cultures and experiences are very different from your own; if want to own property in a pricey state without paying ridiculous prices; then White Plains just might have what you're looking for.

The worst part is the feeling of isolation from my artistic communities and friends in NYC. The best part is that I live amid trees and am still not only close enough to visit, but so connected by public transit that I need only step outside my front door to avail myself of it.

White Plains is a hidden value when it comes to places that people decide to move. It doesn't feel like a privileged place (I see you, Scarsdale), but that's a good thing. If it did feel privileged, then I'd feel, in Raymond Chandler's words, like a "tarantula on a piece of angel's food cake."

Thing is, I don't feel like that. I feel at home. Read Less
The people are unbearable! 1.5 rating By MLocke ( Mar 28, 2018) Westchester is one of the most expensive places to live in the country because of its proximity to the city and its safe neighborhoods. It is also home to the most entitled, anti-social and judgmental people on the planet! Interpersonal relations in WP are defined by looking for ...Read More the worst in every kind person you meet and seeking to outdo or ruin them for your own satisfaction. Seriously, I work as a school teacher and I've never seen parents this competitive and vindictive. Helicopter moms that will do what's worst for their kids if it means showing off a trophy report card or college admission (never mind that their children are suicidal from stress and the constant supervision). Entitled kids who will threaten with lawsuits over being given sub-par grades. And every administration bows to their whiny whims, from elementary school to college. It is also a very socially conservative area despite being in eternally blue NY. Everyone constantly whines about the growing Hispanic population (whom, on average, are far kinder than those who have been here for generations) and the black population (which is largely relegated to high rises on the two worst streets in the city due to the astronomical cost of living). Gay and trans kids find themselves shamed and shunned by their parents. The police will target anyone and everyone who catches the ire of any noisy busybody (black kids in white neighborhoods, skateboarders downtown, men sitting alone in parks). If you stick out in any way, prepare for the natives to assume the worst and for the police (who have little real crime to manage) to come running. All of this combines to create a pervasive and underlying feeling of hostility that makes NYC seem like a welcoming hippie commune by comparison. I've been lucky enough to avoid the ire of these piranhas for two decades now, and I'm planning to escape to a kinder place soon. Don't come here if you're a mentally and socially healthy human being, period. Read Less
