Great town, with awesome schools User Rating 5 rating By Bebee ( Feb 28, 2014) I love White Bear. It's a great community with a great sense of community pride. There isn't much to do here unless you enjoy just being outside when it's nice. People are always out walking with their kids, dogs or out for their daily runs. Unfortunately, the actual Lake, is at ...Read More an all time low, so the beaches have looked really bad the past few years. Downtown White Bear is very cute and has some fun little shops. A favorite spot for everyone is Cup & Cone, the town ice cream/sub sandwich place. Just beware as it's also the local teenage hangout so the language can be rude.
My favorite part of living here, as a parent, are the schools. They are all amazing and have a great curriculum. The 2 Middle Schools are in the process of becoming International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, which is a great honor. They have some cool classes like "Design/Modeling (an engineering class), 3 different music programs and 4-5 options for foreign languages. The one thing that I wish were different are the class sizes. My son, who is currently in 5th grade, has 29 kids in his class...and yes, that is just for one teacher. So where it says 16:1 for class sizes, that is WAY off!!
As with any city, there are good and bad parts of White Bear, but as a whole, it's very family friendly and safe. There is also a local dog park, which my dogs love!
Also, if you are like most people who work in St. Paul or Minneapolis, there is an Express bus from Maplewood Mall which is about 10-15 minutes away. It's very convenient and a huge savings on gas, parking and your patience.
I would recommend White Bear for more of the family oriented or retiree. It's not such a "cool" spot for the younger crowd...in my opinion. Read Less
