I think it's important to update the review of Walnut Creek, especially since the pandemic, but also because there have been changes in the last 10-20 years. First, housing costs aside, I love living here. I'm a California native and have lived in other parts of the state but mos ...Read More
tly here. The amenities, I would argue, are a strong point! (I see its low rating here) As someone who has been going out to various events, dancing, music concerts and dining a lot in recent years I can tell you what's available and what's changed! It used to be said that for upscale shows and dining, for example, you have to go into San Francisco but in recent years many say that isn't true anymore. We have casual to upscale dining and entertainment. The Arts Center (the name has changed several times) is beautiful with many theatres and events. I once saw an incredible Jazz event there and at the Speaker Series, I listened to and met former Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright. It was a 10 minute drive for me! We also have free concerts outdoors in the summer and people come from surrounding areas to shop at Broadway Plaza, our large outdoor mall. We have casual shops to upscale. I think we need more dance places, not just little places like Dan's but we do have The Greenery now which is a restaurant that hosts local bands instead of just being a part of the golfing community. I don't golf, but we have that too! Boundary Oaks Golf Course is well known. We have easy access to hospitals and other medical services and buses, BART (the Bay Area Rapid Transit system) and a downtown Trolley that reminds me of the Cable Cars in San Francisco (without the lines!) There's often events at Civic Park downtown near our beautiful library built in 2010. More restaurants have outdoor seating since the initial pandemic when indoors was closed for a bit and it's lively just walking downtown on a weekend night on Main or Locust. The newish restaurant Bourbon Highway always seems lit up with music and people dancing. Housing prices have skyrocketed and traffic through town is slower but there's always something to do here or in a neighboring town just a short drive away. We don't need to drive far anymore, we have everything we need nearby but easy access to longer adventures within a 1-4 hours drive in either direction, so lots of variety of options.

I've lived close to Walnut Creek, located in the San Francisco East Bay, for most of my life. The city has a Mediterranean climate--moist, cool winters and dry, hot summers. Granted, it is more of a place where people live than a destination to visit, but Walnut Creek has much to ...Read More
offer.
Despite its agricultural roots, Walnut Creek is very much a suburban utopia. It lacks the excitement of the big city. However, San Francisco is only a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) ride away, and Walnut Creek has a station with a direct line.
Walnut Creek has a number of educational opportunities such as the Lindsay Wildlife Museum and the Lesher Center for the Arts. For fans of the outdoors, Walnut Creek boasts a bounty of gardens and parks. The Boundary Oak Golf Course is an 18-hole green with manicured lawns and lovely views of the surrounding hills.
The shopping in Walnut Creek is also fantastic. My girlfriends and I will often travel miles to spend a leisurely afternoon strolling about the Broadway Plaza Shopping Center, or eating at one of Walnut Creek's great restaurants. The Counter, specializing in gourmet burgers, is a personal favorite.
