Vero Beach: A Lifelong Local’s Honest Assessment 1.5 rating By Anonymous ( Nov 23, 2025) I’ve lived here my entire life. Unfortunately, it hasn’t.

The current county commissioners and mayor seem directionless. I’m fully supportive of development, but only when it’s done thoughtfully and with intention. Instead, we’re letting large national builders flood the area with subpar construction and bland communities that lack any real design or character.

Yes, there are promising projects on the horizon — the Three Corners redevelopment, the Vero Beach Museum of Art redesign, and the Indian River Mall revitalization are all steps in the right direction. But they’re long-term solutions. Meanwhile, our schools continue to decline, the overall aesthetics of the community are slipping, and somehow we still have dirt roads in the 21st century despite millions in tax revenue. Derelict buildings that should’ve been condemned years ago remain untouched. The list goes on, and while many of these issues aren’t unique to Vero Beach, they’re especially frustrating for a place that relies so heavily on tourism.

Restaurants and shopping are among the most disappointing I’ve seen anywhere in Florida. We can’t even maintain basic landscaping — medians overgrown with untrimmed trees and grass don’t exactly scream “destination.” Visitors can’t wait to get off the mainland, and even the island isn’t everything it’s made out to be.

Vero Beach has always struggled with its identity. It wants to be a high-end coastal town steeped in arts and culture, but it’s not. The beaches are fine when they’re empty, but the sand often feels like broken glass and the water quality is hit-or-miss. With thoughtful planning, it could be great — truly great — but I’m not sure what it will take to get there when most of the voting population is well into retirement.

My biggest fear is that Vero will drift toward becoming another Port St. Lucie. We’ll likely move before our kids start school, because after growing up here and attending both public and private schools, I know there are far better options elsewhere.

Maybe one day Vero Beach will shed the “Zero Beach” reputation, but after a century of existence, it’s hard to imagine that happening anytime soon. Read Less

The Traditional design of McAnsh Park neighborhood is wonderful, and is one of my favorite neighborhoods on the Treasure Coast. Also, the neighborhood to the east of McAnsh, (18th Ave and 24th St) is very pleasant.

If you are a white wealthy retiree, this place is absolutely geared towards you. I will quote one of my fellow area natives: "Make sure you find a nice-gated enclave to insulate yourself from the poors. But we don't want to kick them out, we need them for the service industry". The government and business elite, from a long-term macro view, will stumble over themselves to cater to the retirement community. NIMBY is the rule here, despite a lot of lip service to "affordable housing". There is some overlap between the needs of retirees and families, but those aspects are limited here. What will determine your happiness here is whether you can make it into an enclave/ nice neighborhood.

The people here are the absolute worst, and it's a special kind of jerk that transcends race or class. Must be something in the water. You're either an object for getting what another person wants, or you are an obstacle. I can't find much humanity here. Going to the beach and isolating yourself from them only works for so long. Eventually, you have to deal with these people in public. Avoid shopping on the weekends or you will find yourself in conflict.

I was recommended to move here because "it's a quiet beach community that is a nice place to raise a family". Wow, that may have been the case a decade ago. My recommendation would be to wait for the latest migration wave to settlef, and check this place out again in 2024-2025. It could be a nice place to live. Read Less

Which means they can treat their tena ...Read More nts any way they want and know that they won’t leave. Houses for rent are a bit of a joke. You definitely don’t get what you pay for. The rest of the apartments are 55+ or income restricted. Job opportunities are not plentiful. Keep in mind that when the “snow birds” are “in season” here you’ll be waiting for a table anywhere you go, not be able to get a doctors appointment for months at a time, and will constantly deal with obnoxious drivers. Some may use the excuse that the snow birds bring in extra income for the state. However, it’s not worth the hassle in my honest opinion. Vero Beach was fun for a few months. Enjoyed the Arts District and all of the hip little night spots downtown. But once you have a family, there’s not much else to do. Too hot to enjoy the outdoors in the Spring, Summer, Fall. Too crowded with senior citizens in the winter. Read Less

The best areas of Vero Beach are all of the coastal areas, capitalizing on the warm waters of the Atlantic and the idyllic sandy beaches. Disney's Vero Beach Resort is the area's biggest tourist attraction, providing an extensive family-friendly destination for fun for all ages. The Indian River Lagoon is the hub for boating, kayaking, and fishing activities. The historic downtown area has been re-engineered to provide a host of dining and shopping options, as well as numerous art galleries. Residents and visitors alike flock to the famous Marsh Landing Restaurant. Read Less
