A Wonderful Experience 2.5 rating By Anonymous ( Mar 27, 2023) I lived in Vanderhoof for four years, residing in the town for several years, then to Sinkut Lake for the balance of my stay.

It's farming, forestry, and Mennonite heritage made for a safe and sane community, and I've yet to encounter a friendlier collection of people.

...Read More from the start, it was a positive experience. Arriving late in the day after a long drive from Vancouver, I decided to unwind from the journey over a coffee at Woody's Bakery. Glady's served me, and noted the fact that they'd be closing soon, but told me not to feel rushed, to enjoy my coffee, as she'd just lock the door until I was finished. After living with hostility and turmoil every day for years in Vancouver, this simple act of kindness meant the world to me.

Over the years, I came to know a great many of the area's residents, and never before-or since-have I had as many friends.

On the practical side of the equation, all of your fundamental needs can be met locally as there are two large grocery stores, hardware stores, etc. For your major, or large, purchases, most people travel to Prince George an hour away.

Sinkut mountain dominates the landscape, and most homes are located just steps away from some pretty formidable wilderness.

Winters are long, and summer ends pretty abruptly by September. Depending on your tolerance, enduring the protracted winters is one largest single challenge to life in the north. Despite all of the advantages to living in Vanderhoof, it was the length and intensity of the winters that ultimately got the better of me, and I moved away. However, note this one fact: It was a decision that I came to regret, and a decision that still haunts me to this day, as my next location was warm, but the temperament of its inhabitants was as cold as a Vanderhoof winter.
