We were known for our dike that runs into Galveston Bay. The Texas City Dike is basically a miles long park that offers fishing, camping and the like. It is a recreational area that people ...Read More cruise in their vehicles and have a good time. Hurricane Ike blew the dike away a few years ago. It is like the city lost its soul for a considerable amount of time. Although the dike was re-established, the parks department took the opportunity to enforce rules that are not as conducive to the dike being the hang out spot that it once was.

Additionally, what was once a fertile place to fish and crab became devoid of wildlife. We used to catch tons of golden croaker and blue crabs. It made for quick large easy meals while we were hanging on the beaches on both sides of the dike. Some areas are beaches and others are cropped with very large granite rock piles that are perpendicular to the piers that jut out along the area in which the shrimp boats docked.

Many of the old shrimping boats are gone, and many of the piers did not make it also. They were re-built in some cases, but the appeal was different when they were old decrepit shrimping trawlers and weathered piers. That old nautical ambience is gone. However, good fishing is returning and more people are discovering that the dike is back functioning. It would be appropriate to discuss other areas, but Texas City is completely about the dike in so many ways. The fish could not be any fresher than catching them ourselves and frying them immediately. The shrimp cannot be any fresher than waiting for the trawlers to come in and buying them straight from the boat. Read Less
