I lived in Tamiami, Florida for a short period of years earlier in my life before I relocated further north. Tamiami is a small community on the far edge of the Miami metropolis, just a stone's throw from where the Florida Everglades begin. It's accessible from the downtown area ...Read More
on a straight shot via a couple major roadways but in terms of suburbs in major cities it's fairly removed from Miami's hustle and bustle.
Tamiami is not terribly crowded, which for someone living in what is still considered Miami was a welcome factor in my years there. Miami is a crowded, busy city and to live in a relatively peaceful neighborhood while still being just 30-minutes from downtown was exceptional. Traffic around town was almost always light because none of Miami's major highways reached out to Tamiami. Of course this could prove to be a problem on the days I desired to head to the beach or city, as it meant going out of my way just to find a straight route into the city.
The distance to those famed Miami beaches was also a negative point when I lived in Tamiami. Its location provided all the heat and humidity of South Florida but without the central location to any beaches that almost every other city in Florida provides. Tamiami sometimes felt like it might has well have been in the center of the state when it came to driving to where the action was. And if I drove out of town in the other direction I was in the middle of the Everglades, with nothing but swamp for dozens of miles.
Despite that Tamiami still provided a nice balance of Miami city-living with the quiet of a South Florida suburb. Nightlife and dining were never more than 45 minutes away and if I wanted to stay in town and away from the crowds that was always a nice option as well.
