We moved to Smithfield when I was a kid. It is a rural town in the sand hills of North Carolina about 30 minutes outside of our capital, Raleigh. The cost of living is reasonable, but not very many high paying jobs. There is a popular outlet mall, Carolina Premium Outlets, off NC ...Read More
70 and US95 that tourist like to stop at on the way to the beach. We have a new bypass around the town that helps with moving tourist traffic, but I think it has hurt local businesses when traffic was removed from the town.
There are small farms in the area that grow cotton and soybeans, as well as fruit such as peaches and melons with lots of fresh produce. The education system has declined over the years, sad to say, but we do have a community college. Johnson College offers a nice Arboretum to the public with several other parks in the area. There is a small airport on the edge of Smithfield for small plane use.
