I lived in Sierra Vista AZ for one year while I was teaching in Douglas, a nearby town on the Mexican border. Sierra Vista is a desert town of about 45,000 people, and the best part about living there is getting outside to bike or hike any time of the year. Even when it gets hot ...Read More
during June and July, mornings and evenings are almost always cool. Those are my favorite times to go out biking. The city offers an extensive map of bike trails to area attractions, but just biking around the 20 miles of city paths is fun.
Sierra Vista is close to the Coronado National Memorial in the Huachuca Mountains. You can park at the visitor center, learn about the Spanish quest for gold, then walk the forested trails. Friends and I would hike to a cave and climb down inside if we remembered our flashlight. A short drive down Highway 90 brings you to the San Pedro River, a national conservation area known for its diversity of wildlife. It's a wonderful place for seeing birds and hiking under the cottonwoods that line the river.
If you love the outdoors, Sierra Vista is fantastic, but it's short on culture. Apart from occasional events at Veteran's Memorial Park or the high school, there's not much happening. Tuscon is 75 miles away and has many museums and theaters. Restaurants are average. If you're looking for great Mexican food, a quick trip across the border is the best bet. Shopping is also average, except for the thrift stores. They're wonderful! The nearby Fort Huachuca army base means people come and go, often donating interesting items to Goodwill or St Vincent de Paul.
