f the Santa Susanna Field Labs (near Rocketdyne facility) had partial core meltdowns in 1959 and 1963, which were not made public for 20 years--until 1979, at the time of 3 Mile Island incident. Unlike modern-day facilities, this reactor did NOT have a containment dome, and radioactive elements 80-100 times worse than 3 Mile Island were released. I am somewhat new to the area, but the locals tells me that neighboring Chattsworth and Simi Valley have high cancer rates. Google search Santa Susanna Field Labs and read for yourself. Sad because the mountains are drop-dead gorgeous, the weather near perfect, and the economy solid.
