Historic Inner City Neighborhood with Charm, Character and a Storied 4 rating By Burvey ( Nov 10, 2012) Highland Park is one of the original streetcar suburbs built in Richmond after the Civil War. Most of the houses were built before 1940, and fine examples of Queen Anne Victorian homes along with many American Foursquare houses in every possible variety (stucco, brick, porches, e ...Read More tc.). Local preservation groups like ACORN are working to save some of the interesting architecture in the neighborhood. The Southern Tip part of Highland Park is located directly across the bridge from the VCU Biotech Park/MCV and is within a mile of the Virginia Capitol. The neighborhood is also known as Chestnut Hill (with the area above Magnolia street being known as 'The Plateau'). The entire Chestnut Hill/Plateau area are a designated Historic District.
A lack of appealing neighborhood grocery stores and restaurants is offset by the affordability and convenient location of the neighborhood. The crime in the neighborhood is still somewhat evident, but the street corner drug dealing that plagued the area in the 2000s is almost a thing of the past.
The neighborhood is extremely easy to find on a map - it's just NE of where I-95 and I64 intersect. Shockoe Bottom and VCU are all withing bike riding distance. Read Less
